I'm looking for a good place to go backcountry camping near west texas, does anyone have any suggestions?

I've been up to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park and it was fantastic, but looking for new ideas... New Mexico, Southern Colorado, etc

Pecos Wilderness North East of Santa Fe. I was up there memorial day and was post-holing through thigh deep snow. That should all be melted by now.

Hike to the Truchas Peaks - Pecos Wilderness

Gila National Forest, near Silver City, NM. I think the trail I hiked was the Skyline Trail (not sure of the name). It stayed above 10,000' for most of the hike.

There's also some interesting terrain in Carson National Forest that sees few visitors, west of Tres Piedras, NM.

Latir Lakes north of Red River area, You'll have to research this area and how to get to it, but you won't regret it.

I second the Latir Wilderness. One of my favorite areas to goof off in.

I've been elk hunting in both the Pecos and Latir areas. Great country.

I'll second the Gila. I've camped out there several times and it is beautiful country.

Just north of Ruidoso in the Lincoln National Forest. The White Mountain Wilderness area trails. Nice trails and good views.

Also the Goose Creek trail out of Red River up to Gold Hill and the Wheeler Peak Wilderness. Pretty easy 2 day hike to get up there, and then the ridge between Gold Hill and Wheeler gives access to the whole area.

Thanks fellas, I will look into these and figure out which works best for me. I'm leaning more towards something in the Southern or Central part of New Mexico.

I'm in Cloudcroft, NM right now and there are many great trails for hiking around here in Lincoln Natioal forest. They range from a couple miles to upwards of 30. If you want some specific info let me know, I have hike several as I try to come up here once a year. Just hiked a trail that use to be an old railroad and found lots of neat stuff.
