If you do a double major and you go over 160 hours (which it would be almost impossible not to), will you still be charged the excess credit hour fees?

No

I got a letter saying that I had excess hours my senior year, I wrote a 10 page or so thesis about why I shouldnt get charged .. due to various reasons, Change of Catalogue (I left school and came back and that was between the old humanities system and the new cultural diversity system, as well as the old KINE system, where you needed 4 credits and not just 2), Courses I was forced to take that didnt fulfill anything in my degree plan (didnt start in M151), then with minors and yeah .. lots of stuff that counted towards something at one time or the other, or for something .. lol Im paying interest on that crap now even though taking it was worthless towards getting my degree.

They got it .. and I didnt get charged extra.

I called them and asked why .. they said "all that was necessary was that you needed to say you had a declared minor and it would have been taken care of." Appearently before they send you the notices, they dont check your academic record for declared minors or double majors. I actually almost had a double major, in ELEN and GERM, but I didnt have the time to take all of the necessary liberal arts crap that I hadnt taken in my ELEN core curriculum, in order to get a BA in German. I only ended up that close to a major in German in the first place because they went and changed the rules on what constituted a minor right before I declared the minor ..

So I ended up with two minors, in Math (quasi default for ELEN) and then Germ.

it all depends on your initial enrollment date in college.

I just asked an undergrad advisor, and they said the best thing to do is go and talk to the registrars office. He reiterated that while they will often make the exception, anytime you are dealing with 2+ departments, nothing is a sure thing. He also thought the limit had been moved to 170 hours.

I graduated with 183 (double degree + minor, grad in '07). I remember getting the warning letter, but didn't get charged extra because it was required in my degree plan. Talk to the degree audit office if you want to know for sure.
