Going to be in Washington the weekend after next and I noticed the Orioles are playing the Cardinals. Figured I would stop by whatever game Wacha was pitching then noticed he's on the DL. Does anyone know when he will be back? Also, does anyone happen to know if he is still travelling with the Cardinals?

Last I heard was that he was targeting a return in September. He most likely still travels with the team.

They said during the broadcast last night that Wacha had just been moved from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL. He's scheduled for an MRI later this week and will begin throwing next week if that looks good.

Also, the Cardinals traded for starting pitcher Justin Masterson from Cleveland yesterday. The conjecture is that this would allow Wacha to spend the remainder of this season in the bullpen, so he wouldn't have to work his way back to pitching 6/7/8 innings after spending so much time not throwing at all.

Espn Commentators said that he would not pitch again this season to play it safe.

Wacha is in the dugout tonight. Al Hrabosky says he has an MRI scheduled for Monday. If everything is as expected on the MRI, then he should be available by September, and they are hoping that he will be able to return to the rotation.

Wacha's MRI went well. He is starting to throw now and they are confident he will be back with the big team before season is over. Hoping to have him as a starter but time will tell.

They were just talking about Wacha on tonight's broadcast. The PBP guy talked to Wacha this afternoon. Today was day 3 of throwing (light toss), and Wacha feels great. The Cardinals have put him on a workout routine to strengthen his legs. They feel that he should be getting more velocity from his legs and less from his arm (something to that extent). They are still expecting him back in early September and Wacha is determined to work his way back to the rotation (in time for potential post season play, I suppose).

They said on the broadcast a few minutes ago that Wacha has been throwing 150' on flat ground and is doing well with that. Things are looking good for him to be cleared "soon" to throw off of a mound. They didn't say what soon meant though.

Heard on the radio pregame just now that Wacha threw off of the mound Saturday and again yesterday. Yesterday he threw 35 pitches, almost all change-ups. He felt good after both sessions and had an MRI after yesterday's. The MRI was good.

Wacha's throwing impresses Matheny

quote:
Matheny said he thought the 23-year-old righthander would have a couple of more bullpen sessions later this week before he could face any hitters, either here or in the minors.

But, Matheny said, “It just looked real effortless when the ball was coming out of his hand. He wasn’t trying to hump up and do anything extraordinary. It looked good.”

Wacha has had another MRI, which confirmed his continued progress. “He’s been amping up his work with no negative effects,” Matheny said.
