I think the top candidate that many of you have forgotten about is former rice coach Mike Taylor. This guy has been to the CWS 5 times, a few of which they kicked us out, and he has worked for one of the all time best coaches in college baseball. I think we would be stupid not to bring coach Taylor on board. If I am not mistaking, coach Taylor currently works in Houston giving lessons

Just something I found online about him for any one that doubts his ability.
quote:
A former star player under head coach Wayne Graham at San Jacinto College, Taylor is in his 12th season at Rice after being hand-picked by his legendary mentor to join the Owl staff in 2000. Prior to Rice he had worked eight seasons coaching on the junior college level.

After tutoring the Rice infielders on fielding and executing defensive schemes, Taylor will work with the Rice pitchers in 2012. He shares the recruiting coordinator duties with fellow assistant coach Patrick Hallmark. On game days since 2009 Taylor has coached at third base.

In recruiting, Taylor has done an exemplary job of finding the top student-athletes from across the country. He has then coached and developed their talent to get the scouts' attention at the next level.

In 2011 one of Taylor's most-noted former infield pupils, third baseman Anthony Rendon, was the sixth player selected overall in the major league draft. His former Owl Paul Janish has been a starer for the Cincinnati Reds since 2010.

Rice has become a veritable pipeline to the pro ranks with 84 Owls selected in the major league draft in Taylor's 11 years on the job. There is every reason to expect more of the same in the years to come.

Major league teams would certainly give the Taylor's coaching career a high grade, and the University would no doubt do the same, for making sure the Rice student-athletes are students (and citizens) first. In 2011, 17 members of the Owl baseball program were selected to the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a semester grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

In 2010 starting first basebaseman Jimmy Comerota was selected from among all the baseball programs in the conference as the 2009 C-USA Spirit of Service Award winner. The prestigious Spirt of Service Award is presented by the C-USA Commissioner to one student-athlete's in each sport for their academic success, performance on the field, and the amount of charity work performed within the community.

When he worked primarily with the Owl infielders Rice was routinely considered to have one of the best infield groups in college baseball. Rice's national championship team of 2003 had an errorless streak of 85.2 innings at one point, which was then followed by another of 73.1 frames without a defensive miscue.

A former standout shortstop for Graham at San Jacinto, Taylor came to Rice in 2001. Previously he spent two seasons as an assistant at Galveston College, helping the Whitecaps to a two-year record of 84-34 and a conference championship in 2000. Galveston finished the season ranked fourth nationally.

Previously, the 43-year-old Houston native spent six seasons as an assistant at Blinn College in Brenham. Those Buccaneer teams won two conference titles and never failed to finish below the top three in the league. Blinn went 259-103 in those six seasons, ranking as high as number-three in the nation in 1993.

I see a lot about defense and pitchers, what kind of hitting work has he done? Why did he leave Rice after 2012?

For the anti-small ball crowd, Rice has arguably been every bit the "small ball" offense we are.

If he does get the job then RC needs to go after Kevin McMullan from Virginia.

Assistant Coach: University of Virginia

In his 10th season at Virginia and seventh as associate head coach, Kevin McMullan serves as Virginia's recruiting coordinator and hitting coach and works defensively with the Cavaliers' infielders and catchers. McMullan is known as one of the top recruiters and developers of players in the country.

The 2009 National Assistant Coach of the Year, McMullan has helped guide Virginia to 411 wins in his nine seasons, an average of 45.7 wins per season. Virginia is one of just 10 programs to reach the last nine NCAA tournaments.

Virginia advanced to its first College World Series in 2009, setting off a remarkable stretch as UVa has recorded 195 wins in the last four years - the second-most wins of any Division I program. In this stretch UVa has made two trips to the College World Series and won three NCAA Regional championships, two ACC tournament titles and two ACC Coastal Division crowns. The Cavaliers have hosted three-consecutive NCAA Regionals, notched a pair of 50-win seasons and spent two stints atop the national polls since 2010.

Virginia has led the ACC in batting over the last five years combined. The Cavaliers own a .314 team batting average during that span and led the conference in batting in 2009, 2010 and 2013.

Defensively, the Cavaliers also have shined under McMullan, and UVa owns the highest fielding percentage in the ACC since his arrival in 2004 (.972). Seven of the 10 teams have ranked among the nation's top 40 in fielding percentage. The 2010 and 2011 teams each set program records in fielding percentage, with a .977 (2010) and .978 (2011) marks. Both ranked seventh nationally.

In 19 years as a college coach, McMullan has had over 70 players signed by professional organizations. Twenty-seven of his Virginia position players have been selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, including Ryan Zimmerman (Washington Nationals), Mark Reynolds (Baltimore Orioles), Joe Koshansky (Colorado Rockies), Brandon Guyer (Tampa Bay Rays), Sean Doolittle (Oakland) and David Adams (New York Yankees), all of whom have reached the big leagues.

Zimmerman took just two months to jump to the major leagues and was selected as a National League All-Star in 2009, becoming the first former Cavalier to appear in the MLB All-Star Game. He also earned a Gold Glove Award in 2009 and was a Silver Slugger Award winner in 2009 and 2010. Reynolds and Koshansky each made their big league debuts in 2007, while Guyer earned his first call-up in May 2011, swatting a home run in his first at bat. Doolittle made his MLB debut in 2012 with Oakland, while Adams debuted with the Yankees in May 2013. McMullan also was vital in development of the Washington Nationals' Chad Tracy (1B-3B) while coaching him at East Carolina.

YEAR-BY-YEAR Virginia posted its third 50-win season in five years in 2013, going 50-12 while playing host to an NCAA regional and super regional. UVa led the ACC in batting (.314) and ranked second nationally in runs (489) and third in scoring (7.9). Mike Papi was named a First-Team All-American while becoming UVa's first ACC batting champion since 1981. Outfielder Joe McCarthy posted the highest batting average for a UVa freshman in 29 years and was tabbed the ACC Freshman of the Year as well as a Freshman All-American. Papi and McCarthy were joined by Branden Cogswell, Reed Gragnani and Nick Howard on the All-ACC squad.

Virginia played host to its sixth regional in nine years in 2012 while going 39-19-1 and earning a second-place finish in the ACC Coastal Division. Second baseman Keith Werman was named to the All-ACC team, while Derek Fisher was a unanimous selection as a freshman All-American. Featuring a starting lineup with four freshmen, Virginia 14th nationally in scoring, 10th in on base percentage (.400) and fourth in triples (32). Stephen Bruno had a huge year, batting .370 while tying a school record with 23 doubles.

Interviewing =/= leaving. Sumlin interviewed for a few NFL jobs and even got an offer. Last I checked he's still here.

With these new bats the NCAA uses they are forcing everyone to play small ball.. It takes the fun out of baseball.
And on the Virginia coach comment, why would we bring a coach from the east coast who doesn't have a clue about recruiting down here.

Coach Taylor coached up Anthony Rendon: 2009 avg. 388 slugging. 702 as a fish. 2010 avg. 394 slugging. 801
Diego seastrunk was a career 320 hitter with one year where he hit over 350
Joe savery .382 .335 ..356 Tyler Henley .301 .336 .313.

Just some examples of the kind of guys coach Taylor has coached up.. regardless of Andy is around or not, Taylor is prob. One of the top guys out there not currently with any team.

In 2011, Rice/A&M

Avg: .286/.291
SLG: .377/.402
HR: 23/30
OPS: 764/766

2012:

AVG: .281/.288
SLG: .395/.385
HR: 35/23
OPS: 774/754
Runs: 336/354

That's the only time we have to line up Taylor with Sawyers. In fact, back to 2007, it looks like 2010 was the only year that their offense was significantly better than ours. And I'm of the assumption that their conference schedule was less difficult than ours for most of those seasons.

Not to say Taylor isn't a talented coach. The results at Rice before and during the Childress era and some of the players that coaching staff have produced speak for themselves.
