Just had another element go out and had a hell of a time draining it to replace it. Completely clogged with limescale. Had to replace the gate valve drain with a ball valve drawing. So should be easier to drain from now on.

At what point do you have to replace a water heater? Seems like I could just keep replacing elements forever..

You're already at the point where my family in the hill country would get rid of them. If it's building up rock to the point that it's destroying elements you're not going to flush it out. It's basically a solid now. Whatever white crap you're able to get out the valve at the bottom is just the tip of the iceberg.

I'd install a water softener upstream from the water heater and replace the one you have. The next should last longer.
