A subscription is needed for the additional features only (I think) which I bought less than 6 months ago and are good for a year.

I have a laser but used this primarily for bunkers, carry over water, lay up distances etc. It was very useful for that for me. Distances were extremely accurate. Also able to track score, putts, fairways etc
