I was departing from Chicago Midway airport this afternoon, and a couple dozen burnt orange t-shirt fans were arriving for the ND game. I couldn't resist striking up a few conversations.
Me: "University of Texas, huh?"
Them: "You bet!" boldly said with puffed up pride and joy
Me: "Yea, Johnny Football was awesome."
Them: "Uh, no. He went to Texas A&M." The air visibly draining from their too-tight t-shirts
Me: "What? I thought he grew up a Texas fan!"
Them: "Yea, but Mack Brown did not recruit him."
Me: "But I thought you guys owned the state."
Them: "We do, but"
After this it was all out spin. Mack Brown this. Charlie Strong that. Malik this. Pretty funny, and they were in 100% make-up-a-story mode. The natural order will be restored soon. Blah, blah, blah.
Since I was in Chicago surely I wouldn't know any better. Right?
Me: "Texas A&M class of '83. Gig 'em."
Them: Speechless
Nuff said.
