This article from the Bryan / College Station Eagle got me curious:

quote:
According to a recent National Merit Scholar report, Texas A&M is attracting an increasing number of the program's students, placing second among public universities and 10th overall for the number of students during the 2014-2015 school year.

All I could find were the 2013-2014 numbers online for number of Merit Scholars enrolled:

Stanford 188
Yale University 180
Texas A&M University 162
Princeton 151
MIT 142
UT Dallas 104
Baylor University 88
University of Texas at Austin 65
Rice 51
University of Houston 30
Southern Methodist University 18
Tennessee Technical University 6
New College of Florida 5
University of North Texas 5
Louisiana Tech 4
Texas Tech University 4
Texas Christian University 4
Abilene Christian 3
UTSA 2

My question is, what did those four kids at Tech do so wrong? Criminal records? Forgot to submit applications elsewhere? Knock up a girl from Wolfforth?

And STILL more National Merit scholars than t.u. It's bad enough Baylor is killing them on the field, but in the classroom too?

Maybe the t.u. system should relocate its flagship to UT-Dallas.

Even in tu accepted 80K students, you would still be on the outside looking in.

A&M no longer offers full rides to NMS's. UTD, however, does. I'm guessing Tech offers full ride and all the co-eds you can eat.

A number of schools offer National Merit Scholars a great scholarship package.

I think OU is the top public university with almost a full ride scholarship.
A&M gives a $40K+ scholarship.

Here's a list of scholarships for NMF that may be a little outdated.

I remember when i got my admissions letter to texas, i was shocked that they only offered $25K scholarship to national merit scholars. I thought they would offer a full ride like a&m, most of the SEC schools, southern cal and OU were offering

Since 2010 or so, they cut all National Merit scholarships.

Then you would have been really shocked in 1985. Both A&M and tu offered $2500 over 4 years to NM finalists. Fortunately, other NM scholarship sponsors offered more regardless of the school you chose. I got a whopping $4000 over 4 for mine.

This. Mine was only something like $13k from t.u. for NMS.

If I was a "smart" kid, my college choice from that list would be:

1. Stanford
2. MIT
3. Princeton
3. Yale
4. Rice
5. UT Austin
6. Texas A&M

7. Doesn't really matter

I would (and did) go to UT/A&M before Rice for undergrad since I'm not interested in some sh*tty liberal arts degree.

Wasn't that basically a full ride in 1985?

wow that sucks so bad! I had some Exxon scholarship - I don't even remember what it was - and I got more than that (started in 1986)

$1000 a year? Uh, no, that wasn't a full ride.

I did have other scholarships that in aggregate paid my full freight, but it cost me $6K per year for full cost of attendance.

In aggregate:
$4K - National Merit scholarship sponsored by Pennzoil (beat A&M's $2.5K offer)
$10K - Additional scholarship sponsored by Pennzoil (Thanks, Dad, for working for a generous company)
$10K - A&M President's Endowed Scholarship

That $24K over 4 years made it possible to attend A&M w/o spending my own $.

So, yes, since 1989 there's been ridiculous inflation in college costs--even for "best value" schools like A&M.
