It was bad news when Bates went down. She is a great player and can be the most dangerous weapon on the field. Our attack will continue to struggle without a healthy Emily.

Plus she's a great kid and being dealt another injury would be endlessly frustrating for her.

Had to figure Bates' injury was serious, given her history and the fact that G went onto the field in addition to the trainers. From a practical perspective, even if it's not a "new" injury but a re-aggravation of the prior, she is likely out for at least 4 weeks. Agree this is a huge blow to an offense that is not prolific. Even more, feel heartbroken for this kid as she has worked so hard to come back, was in fine form and is a big difference maker for the team.

Soccer is unique unlike other sports on the substitutions. Referees don't want to assume a player has to leave before beckoning a trainer on the field.

Head injuries are the only time a referee has to immediately stop the game. Like it or not it's the way things are. Personally I would like to see college adopt the 3 sub rule like international soccer. It would take a lot of the dumb physical play out of the college game. Coaches can't target players like they do with us at times.
