How does that help people see? If everyone is on the "wood" then everyone can see just as well as if everyone is on the concrete.

We have the dumbest people running our athletic program. Don't make up stupid lies about why you want us to do something.

Exactly. It's obvious they want to keep the bleachers in good shape. Just say that. Won't work either way

It's stupid to call it a tradition to try to sell it to students.

It's not stupid to actually change to standing on the concrete.

Standing on the wood doesn't buy anyone any better view of the game if we all do it. It does, however:
  • Add to the wear and tear of the bleachers leading to needing to be replaced or tightened more often.
  • Leads to the drunk guy on your row swaying violently if the bench is even slightly loose.
  • Leaves you with less actual room to stand, since you can spread out a few inches onto the stairs if you're on the concrete, and move forwards and backwards as well.
  • Means that you can't sit down pre-game if the people behind you are on the wood.
  • Makes people have to yell "Off the wood... get off the $#$)(#*@$ bench" every time we sing a song or there is an injury.

Plus, if we are all standing on the concrete on the row our tickets are assigned to, we don't have to screw up the War Hymn by yelling left and right each and every time. Odd rows go left, even rows go right, stop yelling and just sing and sway in the proper direction.

So, it makes perfect sense to stand on the concrete, just don't pretend that every little thing we do here has to be called a new tradition or that the Athletic Department gets to dictate what tradition is.

EDIT: Also, if no one is standing on the bench, you can use your feet or hands to stomp/slap it and make more noise in critical moments of the game. It gets muffled if everyone is standing on it, though.

Make it a tradition? That's not how it works.

"Off the wood" was around in 1966 until was still being used when I left in 1982 for the practical reasons mentioned. Do you stand on the hood of your car? Well then go to the parking lot and stop tearing up your own house.

I hope this doesn't interfere with the chubby fish camp girl tradition of screaming "OFF THE WOOOODDD!!!" as soon as she deems it no longer appropriate to be on the wood.

Makes sense- had SRO tickets to my first home game... No wood to stand on gave us a tremendous view of shoulderblades. Once we got everyone shifted ALL of us could see.

But if everyone stands on the wood it brings 100,000 people a whole foot closer to the field enhancing crowd noise. Science *****.

We all know this will not happen. Its just going to cause arguments between people during the game. Maybe they should focus more on cleaning the dirty ass looking concrete on the student side instead of this.

And that's fine, because they have different sections of the stadium.

The problem in the student section is the yelling and arguing of which way to go, and the poor people who get caught in the middle of contrasting swaying and get smashed to death.

Or, we could all go right, it doesn't really matter. Let's just not yell directions during the War Hymn and smash people.

The impact loads from people jumping back and forth from the wood when big plays happen will be worse than if everyone just stood on the wood.

Who does that? I love when people just make up scenarios to make every little policy change sound crazy or dangerous. Nice touch with a semi-fancy engineery phrase like "impact loads."

The problem with the "New Tradition" is that its kinda quietly coming down as a mandate. It really wasn't discussed with all parties. If we don't fight for this tradition, at least on principle, then all of our traditions lose a little importance. Incremental change is the downfall of most organizations.

There is traction being gained to fight this...and yeah, good luck getting students to comply. This was obviously a design flaw on the renovation and they just need to fix that. To eliminate a long standing tradition for the entire stadium because of a few affected seats is not a reasonable response imho.

A little honesty would go a long way. Something like:
quote:
Look guys, the architect screwed up big time. The non-Aggies we hired underestimated how passionate students are for football. They didn't take into account that the 12th Man is so red-ass that it will stand on the bleacher in front of them to get as close to the action as possible. And we love the passion you guys have for the team.

But because of the architect's oversight, we now have some seats in a section of the club and suites that can't see as well when yall are going crazy in the stands. The Ags in those sections paid a $#!+load of money for their seats which helped us to build the stadium, and we'd really like to give them a good experience for their money. So we would like to ask, not demand, that students in the first __ rows of section __ on the second deck to please stand on the concrete as a courtesy to the Ags that paid so much for their seats and are helping to fund the athletic department. We will be adjusting ticket pull in the future to allow students to request bench standing instead of concrete standing in the future. Please help us to avoid having to enter into costly litigation with the architect to try to find a structural solution to students being so red-ass. Thanks and Gigem.
