A&M should publicly support UH to the Big 12

Elevating UH is good for A&M. It means A&M can cap enrollment since there are now quality public options outside of A&M and UT-Austin now that UH and UT-Dallas are Tier 1.

A&M should worry about A&M.

You can include Texas Tech, UT-Arlington, and UNT as well.

Four Texas Colleges Reach Carnegie "Tier One" Status

A&M will have to step up its game to attract top students. The college race in Texas is becoming more competitive.

Just because a university becomes tier 1 and plays in the Big XII, does not mean students will suddenly want to go there.

Plenty of reasons not to want to go to UH.

This allows TAMU to be more selective. It makes too much sense.

The state of Texas can only stand to gain by having more great universities.

That's clearly not stopping 41,000 other people nor any of our recruits (some of them had A&M offers). I didn't find a reason not to want to come to UH.

It's a solid school that has greatly improved its academics and its athletics.

It will never be an A&M or a ut but it can be another good public university that good students can consider.

Not convinced UH playing CFB in the BDF benefits anyone except UH. Don't have a problem with them joining the other dumpster losers, but cannot begin to fathom OP's logic.

Yep. Texas Tech is building a vet school for example. A&M has to focus on being elite. Being "good" won't be good enough anymore.

I'm not even convinced it helps UH.

A winning team attracts students and keeps alumni coming - and hopefully giving - back to the university. Applications to UH are up 30 percent already, Khator said.

Multiple studies, however, question these benefits. Applications sometimes rise after a big win like the Cougars' Peach Bowl victory, but that doesn't mean the quality of students will improve, said Zimbalist, who has conducted multiple studies into the value of college athletics. Other studies, including a 2004 report by Cornell University economist Robert H. Frank, have shown no correlation between sports victories and applicants' SAT scores.
--
There is also no compelling evidence that alumni gifts increase substantially except in rare cases, Zimbalist said. Athletics programs have even been shown to "cannibalize" donations from the rest of the university.

LOL. Yes you did. Its called not getting admitted to A&M, UT or Rice.

And please.. UH still is and always will be second fiddle cougar high. Please quit trying to polish a turd, its making you look pathetic. I understand you being proud of where you go to school, but please be realistic.

This is probably conspiracy theory stuff, but I find the public show of support for UH to be a little too coordinated. Almost like the Big 12 are hoping to PAC 12 sees it and thinks they need to pounce. UH just doesn't have the support locally to be in a premiere conference. And this comes at a time when they support is at a high.

I don't know, just a thought.

Right.

As I've said before UH will never be a TAMU or ut.

But the point is UH is an up and coming university that can be another good option for good students.

The state of Texas can only benefit by elevating UH.

AAU membership is the next box on UH's checklist.
quote:
The school has been ticking off boxes on a checklist of AAU standards such as bringing in more federal research grants, recruiting better faculty and granting more doctoral degrees.

Getting UH into the Association of American Universities, Khator told a legislative committee this week, would raise the state's overall profile in higher education.
And as Texas, under new leadership, has focused more on catching up with the likes of California - which boasts nine AAU schools, compared to Texas' three - UH is the state's best shot, advocates argue. UH, after all, was only the third public school in Texas to earn a coveted Tier One designation by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

UT-Dallas has made even more progress than UH and is ranked higher.
quote:
U.S. News and World Report now ranks it third among public universities in the state, behind UT-Austin and Texas A&M University. Since 2005, the university's four-year graduation rate has jumped from 30 percent to over 50 percent. During that time, it spent more than $1 billion on campus construction and continued to attract some of Texas' best students.

The university's average incoming freshman ACT scores regularly equal, or even surpass, the freshman classes at UT-Austin and A&M
