Wow.

I mean its a nice safe pick. Clean and classy guy. But the dude never won anywhere. 13 seasons at WF and he only had a winning conference record 3 times - winning the ACC in a down year once in 2006. They were only ranked 18th that year and 6-2 in ACC and beat a weak 9-3 GT team in the ACC championship. Overall losing record at WF and .500 at Ohio before that.

Welcome back to mediocrity. No Texas ties at all.

He might win 8+ this seasons as they still have talent but thats not gonna last.

Maybe they are planning for him to have just one year. Like an interim effectively and then hire in the regular offseason hiring period.

Makes sense. You need a scapegoat and a transition guy. Worth a nice check with no expectations.

Yeah it makes more sense as interim. If he was the guy that's a mistake.

He should be allowed to fire everyone and hire his own coaching staff.

This is a good hire to deal with their current major problem, which is NOT the W-L record. Grobe is known for this:
quote:
Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe has suspended eight players from his team over the past two weeks, including two last Saturday - when the Deacons weren't even scheduled to play.

That's an alarmingly large number of youngsters running afoul of "athletic department policy" in such a short period of time. It's especially unexpected at a place like Wake Forest, whose football program doesn't have a history of disciplinary problems.

It's such an unusual situation that Grobe, along with athletic director Ron Wellman, felt it necessary to release an open letter to Deacons' fans Monday.
From the open letter:
quote:
Coaches are teachers. Everyone in our program takes that role very seriously. A primary goal is to develop our players for life after school and football. The hardest decisions a coach has to make are those that may sacrifice winning a game in order to teach a player that making good decisions and caring for others are more important. Parents are most heartbroken when their children make foolish decisions but coaches run a close second. We are disappointed in the behavior of a few of our players but feel that our team will grow from the experience. Lost in the distractions of a few are the overwhelming number of players who are working hard to be the best each and every day.

We want to assure you that every decision we make in our football program and throughout our Athletic Department is with the future and well-being of Wake Forest and our student-athletes at heart. Winning is VERY important but it will not be pursued at the expense of our integrity. Our players need a reminder sometimes that their commitment to football extends beyond the practice field. We want our players to look back years from now and know that they were more important to us than winning a football game.

They brought him on so they can make Tom Herman an offer next year.

This is why its important for recruits to cut through the BS. If this is what it's like for baylol recruits I can only imagine ole mi$$

Looks like a very smart move on Baylol's part. No ties whatsoever, and he can be the man to get rid of any other problem children that to this point are under the radar.

Jim Grobe took in 2 star recruits, redshirted them and developed them over 5 years into players capable of competing in a Power 5 conference.

We bash Sumlin for not developing talent. Grobe is a master at developing talent... He won the ACC with vastly less skilled players at a school that still will not bend their academic standards for football athletes.

He's never had the opportunity to develop talent with the natural athletic ability such as the 4 and 5 stars in Waco. Will his W-L record be the same as Briles? I doubt it. But I wouldn't write Baylol off just yet.

I agree with Olaf -- I would neither dismiss this nor auto label him an interim. This may work out well for Baylor as they still have the ability to acquire Texas players who, for whatever reason, don't end up at A&M, t.u., OU, strong out of state program, or OSU/tech/tcu. I think once all this nonsense is behind them, they can compete quite favorably with the last 3.

a. THEY named him interim.....not any of us.
b. what you said about who they could get is pretty much what they got for the last 25 years before Briles...and they sucked.
c. and no they won't compete with the next tier. they will once again compete with KU, ISU, etc.

again, they could be ok next year, but the downward slide back to mediocrity starts now.

from 1987 to 2009 they made three lower bowl appearances and had 100 total wins in 23 years or just barely more than 4 per year average.

Grobe is an average coach, but this is exactly what baylor had to do. There is no wiggle room for them, they have to do everything by the book and will likely still get hulk smashed by the ncaa. Sad that it wasn't the rapes but the getting caught that forced them to hire a man of character.

Grobe was mediocre to below average there relative to the rest of the NCAA, but Wake has a terrible 0.400 history and provides very little support for the football team. That's a school that has won 2 conference titles in its history and Grobe won 1 of them. They've made 10 bowl appearances and Grobe is responsible for 5 of those. They've only won 6 bowl games and Grobe won 3 of those. Most of all, they went from cream puff status to frequently competitive. That sort of improvement doesn't always show up in the win column but it's a tangible difference that led to some fun upsets for the fans.

Grove is being brought in as a respectable name to clean the place up and get them through a transitional year or two in the process.
Nothing more, nothing less.

meh....compare apples to apples....

WF lifetime record is .408 and under Grobe it was .484 That means he is worth a .076 bump or basically 1 more win per year.

BFD.

Baylor history is .500 without Briles and Briles was 57-21 after the first 2 years or .730 so he is worth .230 or about 3 wins per year.

They are getting worse by at least 2 games per year....more if recruiting actually takes a hit.

Oh by the way - your statement is false anyway. Historically anyway like I said WF is .408 lifetime and Baylor is .512 and was .500 before Briles, and WF was a terrible 26-63 in the 8 years before Grobe.

Clean guy, OK great; this guy wont win five games at BU. Should have let Bennett run the program this year.

It's the same thing Arkansas did with John L. Smith. Babysit and make the most of it.

Anyone that thinks Baylor can grab Herman is doing crack like a suppository.

How are all the other assistants keeping their jobs? It's truly amazing to me that the rest of the staff stays on.

Baylor regents are still Bayloring.

BU BOR: Let's hire a former coach with a good reputation formerly of another loosely associated Baptist university. We will keep all of Art's cronies who know how to "run" the system. Genius plan! This way maybe people will forget the assistant coaches are as guilty as Art. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Hiring of Grobe just means Baylor found a nice old retired gentleman who has a clean record and was available immediately. Grobe may not even have to attend staff meetings. All appearances are that Baylor will try to tread water until they can install little Briles as the head coach. When that happens Briles junior is going to find out what living under a microscope feels like.......margin of error will be less than zero.

So why would the guy pack up and leave the Carolinas for Waco if it was a one year job? Either they're money whipping him, he's about to be fired at WF, or he's getting a five year contract.

For a million or so for 7 months.
