Oh look....another thread calling out Sumlin. I bet he's read it.

At least he has finally admitted the offensive system he was running does not work on the SEC. They only reason it worked with Manziel- he was our 1000 yd rusher that did that on passing plays.
Turner and Mazzone are much better football coaches. Turner is real!
It just took us too long to realize below average coaching, poor system, smaller players do not work in the SEC.
He said we have been recruiting bigger players the last two years in order to adapt to the sec ( records do not indicate that )
Turner and Chavis are attracting Great recruits. A few more staff changes and a continued improvement in recruiting is much better than firing Sumlin and starting over.

Actually Mazzone runs something similar to what Coach Bro ran in '12 (a hurry up version of The Spread). Spav screwed this up with his over-thinking that slowed this down. Plus he had a couple of young QBs that he was breaking in. This offense can work but it needs to be efficient and fast. The more plays we run the more the D gets worn down. OU in '12 and USCe in '14 are prefect examples of what happens when this type of O is run correctly.
But you are 100% correct that Chavis, the Mazzones, and the Turners are legit coaches. The Chief is turning around our D. Mazzone's offenses have averaged 400 yards and 30 points a game for the last 5 or 6 seasons. Turner was the best O Line coach we have ever had. And the other Turner was the D Line coach at Miss St, and they've had some damn good D Lines in recent years.
Us now having real coaches is having an effect on recruiting. We saw this with Mazzone chosing a QB that can actually succeed in the SEC over some over-hyped smurf. Likwise, we see this now with Turner targeting O Linemen that will excel in his system (guys like Green from Southlake that most would have thought would be questionable for the SEC. However the guy is already up to 280 and has the skill set Turner is looking for).
You are correct that it took a few years for Sumlin to realize the importance of having a top notch staff. However, like the saying goes, "Better late than never".
This is now the best staff we have had since the early 90s with Toledo at OC and Davie at DC. Nobody that knows football would consider breaking up this current staff that has been put together. Chavis, Jim Turner and Mazzone among the best in the business.
Yes, Herman has a hot wife. However, there is plenty of free porn out there for the pot bangers.

Chavis has been a blessing so credit is due there. But I really think we need to thank Joe Alleva for being a true dumbass more than anything else.

Getting to the SEC championship would be easier if Bama wasn't in the West.

Supposedly Chavis reached out to Sumlin to talk. Sure Sumlin had to close the deal but it sounds like that hire would have been tough to screw up.

As a well documented Sumlin basher, that's a BS load of crap. I am sure Chavis had a lot of options, and Sumlin got him to sign here. Give Sumlin credit where it's due. Other than Mazzone, and the jury is still out, with a lot of upside potential, Sumlin has put together a coaching staff with a lot of potential.
Don't be insufferable.

I did give him credit. I said he had to close the deal and did so. But we know for a fact that Alleva was being very non-committal toward Miles, wouldn't offer Chavis a contract that provided any sort of job security, and that Chavis was very upset with that situation. After that it devolves to rumors of who contacted who first, but a lot of people across a lot of sites said that Chavis was interested in A&M and reached out to us.
As you said, that doesn't matter a huge amount. Sumlin still had to show up and sell Chavis on his team vision, which he successfully did. But it helps a great deal when the potential employee is excited from the get go, and that was the situation with Chavis.
quote:And both coaches were here before Sumlin was. Building a championship team is tough. Especially when you are in a highly competitive division and your team is recovering from team cancer. (not saying or implying who but we all know there was a cancer in the locker room)
Yep
