So that Art Briles/Jim Harbaugh sleepover isn't going to happen? That's a shame.

I think it is a dumb rule. It hurts smaller schools in areas that aren't great for recruiting plus those with interest from out of state schools.

Great move! Shuts down the Harbaugh sleepover in Waco and also keeps OU from holding camps in Texas!

Great we are located between Houston and DFW!

So it hurts Baylor and Tech?!

j/k.

So, here is the problme with your statement. If you can't recruit a player for a football camp in Lubbock for one week during the summer, what happens once that player finds out they've gotta spend 9-10 months per year there for 3 years?!

But are spring break vacays to Florida still allowed?

It is much more than just that. It hurts smaller schools (FCS, D2, D3) who would typically pair up with D1 schools at these camps as part of their evaluation and recruiting of prospects.

Not just that, it hurts those who might not be D1 recruits from being able to get exposure with smaller schools.

What exactly qualifies as a satellite camp? Is it any camp put together by a school but off campus? Or, do the Nike camps count too?

Didn't the SEC already say that if the NCAA didn't rule this way, they would eliminate their rule against it in the SEC?

It sounds to me like the NCAA was scared of what would happen when SEC coaches started having satellite camps all over the country.

Any camp held by a school that is off campus. The Nike/Rivals Camps don't count since they aren't affiliated with a particular school.

I don't think it is that...Only some much time available for camps but why would the SEC school go all over the country when they are in the middle of the biggest recruiting hotbed in the country.

What happened is the SEC got their way by keeping schools from conferences outside of the region out.

I've got several coaching buddies at smaller schools...this definitely doesn't benefit them at all.

By the way, for those against them, Sumlin was in favor of them, along with a couple other SEC coaches.

quote:
Perhaps the biggest flaw of the SEC's argument was the fact that many of its coaches want to do them. Georgia's Kirby Smart, Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin and Arkansas' Bret Bielema were among those on record saying they were ready to stage camps if the NCAA ban didn't happen.

quote:
Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin told ESPN the Aggies had tentative satellite camps set on the calendar. "We're not the only SEC team that's doing that, too," Sumlin said.

Seems like a silly ruling to me. NCAA should be encouraging innovative recruiting that's within the current rules, not stomping it out.

The Pac-12 was one of the four power conferences to vote in favor of banning satellite camps, but that doesn't mean everybody within the Pac-12 was in favor of the decision. Washington State head coachMike Leach had no problem sharing his displeasure over the decision that was made official earlier in the day."It appears that the selfish interests of a few schools and conferences prevailed over the best interests of future potential student-athletes," Leach said

Confirmed that, without a national ban, the SEC's ban on satellite camps will be lifted on May 29.
