And pretty much every other P5 team. That's the price of getting a coach with any success. Why would a coach sign a performance based contract?

I agree that we extended Sumlin's contract too early and paid him too much. But at the time, I don't think anyone really thought we had a choice. Can you imagine the tar and feathering if our powers would have let him go.

The onky question in my mind was whether there really was an offer from another team. If not, we got sold a bill of goods.

Hind sight is 20/20. But you would have done the same thing.

I bet Texas Exes find $10 million per year for Saban next time. If not $15 million. We'll see if Nick flinches.

Yeah ok.gif

Well, maybe. But should I start bumping all the "Hire Charlie Strong" threads from 5 years ago?

I guess it's worth mentioning: JFF points to the NFL equivalent of the NBA one and done. If you redshirt a highly talented player--especially one with all of the physical tools AND a brain--you might just guarantee that they only play for you for two years. Recruiting then has to focus on kids that are getting pre-developed in late high school in a wealthy system approach that succeeds in strength and conditioning training. We think of those pipelines in Texas as the 5A, but nothing stops the private schools from becoming pipelines if they're willing to make the financial commitment. First one that does that practically guarantees its first 10 pro prospects "give back". And who is to say there couldn't be some loosely attached "guidance counselors" helping those kids get ready. I.e. a variant on the AAU system.

It becomes even more plausible if the NFL does the stupid and expands outside the continental borders and dilutes the talent pool. There will be a dramatic upsweep from college if that happens and the international football sources are, shall we say, non-existent (there are some, but competition level is high rec at best.) Having all of college football convert to two and dones--agreeing to redshirt in order to accelerate physical development--would be awesome. It lowers tolerance for eight to ten year development projects in the HC seat.

I'm absolutely convinced that we have to troll Texas hard on their unwillingness to do what it takes to get Saban. They should believe no other coach can solve the problem and that money is no object. Consuming the entire spend from the LHN just on a head coach undermines Dodds strategy for the LHN. Right now they're still sequestering funds for the academic side and that's how he was going to keep the academic side onboard with escalating costs. If they can't afford to do that after the first five year commitment, what happens next--especially with a HC making 20x the better paid professors--will be a a five-Orville-Redenbacher-bag epic.

And Texas. They paid Strong initially what we gave Sumlin after he showed results.
