With Patterson's recent struggles, cash to players coming out in the media, another 6 win year staring at them, Chollie on the recruiting ropes, big cigars at odds with the Pres and AD, and the athletic departmant now with budget issues forcing cutbacks. Can this dumpster fire burn any brighter?

Dumb question. Even with their defections they had a top 15 recruiting class. Unless they go bowlless this year, then they will have hope in their eyes.

Sips can always go lower. When they do hit rock bottom they will pull out a shovel and start digging.

Looking at their schedule I would say they are looking at a 3 win season worst case, 7 win season best case, and 5 wins season in 2015 being most likely.

Supposing they split the "could be close" games they would have 5 wins. Best case they win 5 out of the 6 "close" games and get to 7-5 and a VERY HOT seat for Fran-chollie.

Likely Losses

Likely Wins
Rice

could be close

They aren't even close to rock bottom. Until they get worse than the McWilliams/Mackovic years, you can't say they are really even all that bad yet.

I'd put Iowa St. in the Likely Wins column. Even if they get outplayed, they'll still find a way to win it (see 2013).

No.

Plenty of scandals to be revealed if the media chooses to do so.

Mackovic had 2 conf championships and a co-championship in 5 years. 41-28 overall, including the 4-7 season (and Route 66 loss to UCLA) that got him fired. Are they better off now or likely to be soon?

That was a Frantastic top 15 recruiting class with at least 4 or 5 of the higher rated recruits not likely to qualify. We will see how great a class it truly is/was come August once we see who actually makes it to campus.

They will hit rock bottom when:

  • Cheating scandals are uncovered all over their athletic department
  • They have to forfeit/vacate their 2005 National Championship
  • The NCAA deals them the Death Penalty
But don't hold your breath.

Take a look at how many of those kids that drove them up the rankings are actually enrolling. Here's a hint...there's a reason top schools in their home state didn't offer them.

As long as they're still making the money they are, it can still get worse.

There are obviously people in their staff that want to win but I'd guess there are several who are quite happy watching the world burn around them as they take home their large paychecks.

Oh... things are going to get much worse.

Consider these:

  • They can't afford to start the tennis complex in 2015. Affects recruiting.
  • They will have a terrible football season.
  • Donor revenue continues to dry up.
  • Recruiting in 2015-2016 will be terrible.
  • Basketball recruiting will be dismal for 2016, knowing they'll fly commercial.
  • Baseball recruits will not like to hear playing for tu is like playing in the minors with crappy bus rides
  • VBall recruits will not like their WV trip.
As the current 2015-2016 budgets start to show tu athletes that playing for Longhorns athletics is no better than any other BDF team, recruiting will be tough. How do you think that MBB team is going to do in school, having gone to China and then the Bahamas during the month of November... along with TGiving.

Morale will continue to deteriorate and you will see one of the Co-OC gone mid football season.

What would be fantastic is for Eddie Reese to come coach at A&M and bring his mens' swimming team with him.

And what do you think is going to happen when the TV ratings stay in the toilet and the Networks call on them to figure out either adding 2 more teams or renegotiate for 10 teams!

Yes, but 1) several of their 4 stars didn't get in, and 2) it was a scattershot class rather than one that targeted their roster weaknesses. They've now completely whiffed at DT 3 years in a row. They picked up a couple of projects last year and then they have maybe 2-3 on the roster from 2011 and 2012. So this year they're going to start out thin and all season long will be a single injury away from big trouble. I don't know what the hell they're going to do next year if they don't land any quality JUCOs. Think our 2008 rush defense where DBs were leading the team in tackles because our DL was manhandled and then our LBs were getting pasted by 300 lbs blockers.

QB might be worse. Last year, they had very little talent on campus to work with, though Swoopes showed a few -- and I mean a very few -- flashes of competence. Then Gentry, a solid prospect out of New Mexico, committed to them and things were looking up. However, rather than trying to build on Swoopes' few positives, grooming Gentry, and moving forward, Strong threw the kitchen sink at a high schooler committed to another school (which pissed off Gentry and ensured that he went to Michigan) and publicly promised Kyler the starting job. Now Gentry's gone, Swoopes has been humiliated by and received a vote of no confidence from his coach in front of the entire sports media (made worse by the fact that Strong couldn't even remember Swoopes' f***ing name after a year of coaching him), and then Strong had to grab some kid that was moved from QB to WR as a high school senior.

Games are won in the trenches and with a good QB. Their OL recruiting has been decent but nothing special, their DT recruiting has been awful, and their QB recruiting was going well until Strong shot himself in the deek at the 11th hour, which now downgrades that to awful too.

Now Strong's next chance to correct those issues is 2016. Obviously you don't expect much from true fish regardless, and age and experience are huge advantages with the LOS positions and QB, so you're realistically looking at 2017 or even 2018 before those positions will have a chance at looking better. And that's only if he cleans up at DT and QB this year.

I know and accounted for missing players in my statement. They still have a composite top 15 class. They are perfectly capable of turning a blind eye to how bull**** it is. If they sign a "top 15 class" and go bowling, they'll cry improvement

Depends on your perspective. tu has always been about money and what it can buy and influence. Obviously that mission led to the break up of a very powerful conference. Imagine if you added to the Big 12 all the major universities run off by the behavior of the sips. I still believe tu will go independent or start playing games out of country to expand the brand and revenues which is what drives everything in Austin. I could also see ESPN being a willing partner in this effort. I have written many times ESPN has invested $300M in tu and they want their return on investment.

The TE out of Florida is the only 4 star that they didn't get in yet.
