Anybody know when the University is gonna upgrade this eyesore?

Might be more Ole Miss coeds tailgating in Spence Park if it wasn't mud hole.

Get outta here; Spence Park is fine; nothing wrong with it and nothing wrong with the scenery already there. Go tailgate at Consol or someplace.

We tailgate in Spence and love it. That being said.... It needs a major overhaul. Will it happen? Hell no.
Need to raise the level of the ground, run the drainage under, and allow generators that meet noise standards. But the Olds got all pissy 10 years ago because they wanted a quiet day in the park.

We are doing our part every game weekend to bring some fun back to Spence. It has gotten a lot better the last 5 years

it's on the list -- gotta get the stadium done first.

no doubt the space utilization is poor with the drainage ditch taking up a lot of prime tailgating real estate

Yawn.

Guess yall haven't been to the grove, Alabama, Arkansas, auburn, or missou. There situation is no better or worse. The grove looks pretty on TV, but both times I have been there it's a mud hole.

Does it really matter what it looks like when it's covered by a sea of humanity?

What always gets lost is that improving Spence Park isn't just for tailgating. It's one of the last couple green spaces on campus and is right in the middle of the most publicly trafficked area of campus.

Making it functional and more used is to the benefit of pretty much everyone. Frankly given the frequency that it happens, concerns for tailgating should really probably have the least input into a park renovation.

Alabama has electric hookups scattered through their primary tailgate area. No generators needed.

Absolutely. Look at what surrounds that area, the Corps Center, Chancellor Sharp's new hotel (President's home), The Association, Kyle, and the MSC. There and Academic Building's Plaza/Military Walk should really be the best foot we put forward to those visiting our university.

Been to the Grove - wasn't overly impressed. The people we talked to were very polite and friendly (they didn't even bless our hearts). It did rain quite a bit the day we were there and that couldn't have helped things, but after the game, when we walked back through there, it was just trashed. I don't mean bags of trash waiting to be picked up - they didn't even bother to throw their trash in a bag or trash can - trash just thrown all over the ground - just nasty.

Commented about it on a friend's facebook, who was chatting with an Ole Miss fan about their trip. Ole Miss person responded that they didn't bother with it "because we pay our caterers to take care of it." Snobbery greater than that of those who sip tea.

Spence Park is okay - Reed Arena/Lot E/Lot H - that's good tailgating.

Spence is a retention basin to avoid flooding downstream.
IF it gets updated, it will likely become the "Athletic Village" centerpiece.
Even if it were landscaped nicely, it would be a mess as noted above after every ball game - who pays for cleanup? ...and no one wants to take responsibility for the budget to provide amenities and cleanup...
Wasted money for a few who have grand ideas - all hat, no cattle...

There are several current threads about parking - or the lack thereof - and wanting to park 'n ride - from various places...

Why not build a proper tailgating area, with amenities, to accommodate not only tailgaters, but also RV''s, etc., out on property owned by A&M on the Brazos?... and have bus service to the games? That would alleviate much of the traffic and cleanup on campus...

And, go ahead and build the two proposed parking structures West of Kyle to also assist in alleviating parking issues. IF better parking were allowed, tailgating could occur on surface lots as designated assuming the Brazos idea does not catch on...

The parking structures will be built in the near term. There has been progress on the construction of up to five new garages around campus, with some of those located within a short walk (or next to) the stadium.

The only area of Spence that can realistically be built on is the site of the President and VPSA houses. If new development in the park grounds ever happens (athletic dorms, etc), it will be there - and there's really no reason why any such development can't be context sensitive and face the park interior rather than throw up a blank wall.

The rest of the park, as noted, has topographic issues and water management responsibilities. That said, it was outlined in the 2004 Campus Master Plan that the park suffers from shallow topsoil over a hard clay pan, and by adding topsoil the water runoff can be slowed and the overall health of the vegetation improved - so a regrading of the northern park areas that are noncontributing to storm water management can actually improve the efficacy of the park.

And although the park is a detention basin in practice, there's ostensibly no reason why the common practice of implementing a retention pond (similar to business parks) can't happen. The original plan for Kyle Field actually called for the implementation of retention ponds in the center of the park, which was shelved in lieu of future funding.

The CMP goes on to say that the limited campus green spaces must be preserved and preferably enhanced to offer natural carve outs within the increasingly urban campus. A surface lot in Spence back in the 80's, which is now the Koldus building & garage, took out an enormous number of mature oak trees.

With the development of the Music Activities Center on Duncan Drill Field, there is now in excess of $840 million of investment immediately surrounding Spence Park. A first-class park renovation could all happen for less than 1-2% of that figure. The answer here is don't change the park for 6 days a year so people can tailgate better, improve it for the students who are there every day and for the Ags who come back to Aggieland during the rest of the year.
