This has been in the works some time. I think Sumlin knew where Malik was going but was blindsided by Mack. It looks like those two were planning this for maximum effect.

Of course, the last LB/DT pair that went to tu over A&M didn't really help them any in the long run (and while the DT is great, the LB ended up JAG).

How do we know he hasn't been calling Sumlin for weeks asking the same questions Malik was? Maybe he just felt if Sumlin can't level with him, then he can't level with Sumlin.
