I think most people would agree that Sherman came into a terrible situation. When he left, A&M had the best offensive line in it's history which made the transition to Sumlin's offense a lot easier. Outside of that, look at the number of first round NFL picks that we've had since Sherman's second year. Sherman wasn't going to win championships but he was a decent program builder.
I think a more accurate comparison is Slocum and Sumlin. Both came into similar situations talent wise with Slocum having the advantage of already being in the program before assuming the head coaching responsibilities.
