Someone posted on another thread that Texas A&M now claims 3 national championships for football. This is a move in the right direction since it used to be only 1939. If A&M is now claiming 1919, 1927 and 1939 why would they not claim 1917?

For the record 1956 and 1994 were undefeated seasons as well, but I'm not saying that we should claim these years. We were on probation in 1994.

On probation in 1956, too.

What is the name of the poll, retroactive or otherwise, that awarded a 1917 national championship to A&M? Therein might lie the answer to your question -- there doesn't appear to be any that did.

Natty or no natty, didn't give up a single point in 1917 or 1919.

College football back then was a very regional sport. The east coast teams got a ton more recognition than the teams in the southwest. When you shut out every team that you play I think that you claim it. Who deserves the retroactive national championship in 1917 more than Texas A&M?

I will admit, the 5th NC in 1976 is kinda hard to claim. However, other major teams are claiming NC's off of the same criteria that awarded the Aggies NC's in 1917, 1919 and 1927.

If USC claims 1939 then Texas A&M should claim 1917.

That same year, Georgia Tech outscored its opponents 491-17, which is probably why they are considered "national champions" by 20 of the various selectors, compared to your two.

But that's fine, I truly did not know any organization had retroactively proclaimed A&M as 1917 national champion.

As a side note, I've always considered this list from the NCAA as more accurate; while the NCAA does not officially recognize a national championship, I believe it does recognize certain selectors, if that makes sense.

But Georgia Tech didn't shut out every team like A&M did...j/k

Since Texas A&M and Georgia Tech did not get a chance to settle it on the field I think that Texas A&M has as much claim to the 1917 title as USC has to the 1939 title.

Georgia Tech claims 4 titles

* Men's
Football: 1917, 1928, 1952, 1990

In addition to GT not shutting out everyone on their schedule I think their team looked a little light in the loafers...

Georgia Tech's great 1917 backfield: (left to right) halfback Everett Strupper, fullback Judy Harlan, halfback Joe Guyon, and quarterback Albert Hill.

Here was Georgia Tech's 1917 schedule. They played every game at home except one. Not knowing the teams back then I'm not sure if it is a tough schedule or not.

I recall being told once that back in 1917 we were waiting to be awarded the national championship, but got snubbed. As a result in 1919, we snubbed whoever wanted to award us the national championship. Of course this is probably untrue, but w/e.
