The question is why do you want a guy in a suit of a giant manly chin jumping up and down Kyle Field? You going to stand next to him for a picture like you do with Tweety Bird at Six Flags?

Mascots themselves are overrated. It's tradition that makes mascots important to a school. Revielle would have just been a dorm dog if she didn't run onto the field to bite at the ankles of the opposing team. You can hear countless number of stories from dead elephants about moments with Rev. Ol Sarge is great, but let's keep him on shirts and marketing material.

The University has him in the vault. No one gets to use him without paying the University big bucks.

I have one of those clocks. Was a gift in the '60s.

The "Old Sarge" that y'll are trying to remember was best immortalized in the Dallas Morning News during the 50's and 60's - maybe even the 70's - by one each Bill McClanahan. Sorry if the spelling eludes me after all these years. He used to do SWC predictions each week, in cartoon form. Folks in Texas couldn't wait week in and week out, just to see whom he was predicting as the weekly winners on the gridiron. His prediction rate was usually pretty darned good, by the way.
His Old Sarge was a giant back in those days.
Contact someone in archives at the DMN. They can probably fill in the blanks on this one. That square SWC clock that was shown a few postings back; well, I used to have one.

Seeing that cartoon of the mascots makes me miss the glory days of the SWC.

This is an Ol Sarge 'action figure' my dad brought home from the MSC during the 50s. My brother still has it....pretty cool item.

My favorite Ol' Sarge t-shirt was for the Cotton Bowl in 1988. It had Ol' Sarge behind a bowl of cereal with a spoon in his hand, and a leprachaun sitting on the spoon. It said "Leprachauns and Lucky Charms...Breakfast of Southwest Conference Champions"

my brother had that Ol'Sarge cotton bowl shirt. I had an Ol'Sarge shirt that said this year we're having pork for Thanksgiving and had a picture of Ol'Sarge roasting a razorback on a spit. I wore it till it fell apart.

Ol' Sarge has been the best TAMU marketing figure of my lifetime...

Swan Song of the SWC

One of my favorite sweatshirts from my youth had a big 'Ol Sarge on it.

Does anyone know if the creator of Ol' Sarge also designed the cartoon lumberjack for SFA?
I have often thought that the two had a similar, if not the same face.
I also like to think that the lumberjack is Ol' Sarge's brother or cousin that couldn't get into A&M. Makes some folks around Nac red faced anyway.

Didn't the College of Engineering have a decal of Ol' Sarge with a surveyor's transit?

I think maybe so. I remember there being decals for allmost all the majors at one point, but I don't remember if they were with Ol'e Sarge, or just Slouch-like cadets.
