Garmin HR strap question

I have a Forerunner 220 with the strap. The unit has a new battery. My HR has been higher lately than I would expect on runs, and I'm trying to keep it low for that training style. Anyway, this morning my perceived effort was not high at all, I could talk easily while running, but my HR was in the 180-190 range (I'm 42). I stopped and counted my pulse, which was considerably lower.

Do the straps wear out? Does it just need laundering? There are no visible problems with the strap or the pod. Just curious and thanks.

Yes, they do wear out. I replaced two before going to an optical - Scosche brand. The Polar strap with work with your Garmin hrm and they are supposed to last longer. Amazon has options.

It may be under warranty. My Garmin HRM did the same thing so I called Garmin and they sent a new one to me for free.
