Impatient dewsher in a Z4 gets behind me at the drive through, and decides he needs to ride up my bumper. I guess while we were waiting in line, he forgot about the hitch I still had in from taking the boat out this weekend. It was just a little nudge, from my perspective, and he pretended it never happened when I didn't react to it. Didn't do anything to my ride, so I don't care.

The lock on my old trucks hitch was corroded so it stayed in all the time.

I had 2 different people hit me and all I ever had to do was scrape their paint off of my hitch. I miss that ranch hand bumper.

I need one on the back of my boat trailer behind my outboard. Last weekend some dumb woman followed me through the neighborhood a couple miles and I swear she was hitched to the back of my trailer...inches behind my outboard.

Same thing for me when I had my truck with a ranch hand on back. I actually had one guy hit me so hard pulling not my apt in CS that it spun me around. Totaled his car. Not even a scratch on mine. I got out looked it over, laughed, said there was no reason for me to stay and got out of there. Ranch hand gets a bit of a bad rap sometimes over quality, but this back pipe bumpers are solid.

I got rear-ended on I-10 a few years ago, no damage.

Daughter was driving my PU to lunch from high school. Lady bumped into her at a traffic light. Damage to my PU = new paint spot on bumper. Damage to her car = 2" ball in radiator.

I guess I should feel bad about it, but she was too close, and I have trailers off and on every day, so it's a PITA to pull the hitch every time.

I rarely pull a trailer, but always leave my hitch in for this very reason.

I got rear ended one time with my stinger on.

The chicks car was totaled.

Unfortunately she called the cops, so I had to wait around for the 3 hours until they showed up. In the mean time, her boyfriend and father showed up and both started *****ing at me for having my hitch on.

I just laughed and implied that the daughter should have been worrying about the road and not trying to get laid.

It can be a double edged sword at times. Grease on your shins, and you have to be a tiny bit more careful backing up.

Same thing happened to me at a fast food drive thru, I was stopped in line waiting to go up to the window. Next thing I know my truck surges like my foot slipped off of the brake and I press the brake real quick. Turns out a guy in a late 90's Firebird just rolled right into me.

It put a nice rectangular hole in his hood and left some paint on my hitch, but he didn't even touch my bumper. I pretty much just said "that sucks" and get back into my truck.

Same thing happened with my dad's 4x4 Suburban, and we always left eh hitch on for the same reason. Damage to us = another scratch on a well-work ball. Damage to her Buick = grille, condenser, and radiator are now scrap metal.

This.

I haven't pulled my trailer for about a year, but the hitch is still there. I got bumped pretty good once by a HS kid in his grandfather's truck, not damage to mine but messed up his radiator pretty good.

My wife hit a trailer hitch in my 03 Mach 1 on a rainy day on the hwy. A hitch through a fiberglass hood doesn't buff out.

While in school I was backing out of the dr office in the Z71 when a woman right behind me begins backing out too. I slam on the brakes and the horn. She never stopped and ended up having a nice 2" hole in her bumper. Both got out, she admitted her mistake and I left. That little hitch has worked like a charm a few times over

If you're rear ended at any speed, are you afraid of the hitch transferring the energy to the frame of your vehicle and bypassing any safety features designed into the car to protect you from such a collision?

And yes, that's a serious question.

I've seen bent frames from a hit at the hitch

Yes, a hard hit can be bad. A softer bump usually pushes the hitch into the weak ass plastic bumpers and grilles most vehicles have today, with no harm to your own vehicle. It's happened to me a half dozen times over the years.

As said above, at low-energy impacts, your vehicle sustains no damage, maybe you get shoved around a little more. At high speed/energy impacts, your vehicle is pretty much hosed anyway, so what's the difference.

Besides, you run into the back of my pickup, the bumper is bolted to the frame with no energy-absorbing parts. You run into my hitch, it's bolted to the frame with no energy-absorbing parts.

What's the difference, except I've added more stuff to crumple before you hit the bumper?

A car is doomed hitting the back of that, spikes or not.

Back in 2004 I was driving a 2000 3/4 Chevy. Got whacked hard from behind. I had crawled through a green light in traffic. HVAC repair van behind me (I guess) looked up, saw green, then punched it, only to realize we were all stopped on the other side. I didn't have my foot on either pedal at the time. He smacked me, I slammed the brakes, hit the Ford Explorer in front of me, who in turn hit the next car.

When all was said and done, my hitch was angled down and just a few inches off the ground. My truck bed was shaped like the grassy knoll, there were dents in the back of the cab from the bed hitting it, there was a dent in the center of the hood from the rear wiper on the explorer, and you could see the outline of the frame through my front bumper. Front bumper smacked the rear liftgate on the explorer, his radio flew out of his dash, and there was minor damage to his front and the rear of the next vehicle.

Ambulance showed up, hauled my grandmother away for evaluation, and the trooper cited the HVAC Van driver for failure to control speed and listed him 100% at fault. I knew my truck was totaled, but to my surprise the Chevy dealership USAA told me to take it to said they could fix it and would have a lifetime frame warranty. I sold the truck in 2011 with about 185,000 problem free (related to that wreck) miles.

That receiver is now in the back of my Dodge.
