I was told by a few old folks that it use to rain here pretty consistently in the 60s and 70s during the wet months.

Places like San Benito and Brownsville were luscious with foliage and tropical plants and flowers.

I believe in one of my ecosystem management classes we discussed this region as a Semi-Arid Sub Tropical that functions on a 30-40 year cycle between drought and regular precipitation.

Looks like we may be getting back to the tropical part.

I've been told that on some old maps that this part of Texas was named as some desert. I forget what it was called.

That seems more appropriate.

It was called the Wild Horse Desert. There is a book published of the same name that is an early history of the area.
