I am planning a camping trip for kids between 5-8. Some of them will be first time camper. Any suggestions on where to go around Houston?

Huntsville state park: Fishing, hiking, biking, canoe rental, nice park.

Lake Somerville (multiple parks, all nice)

Sam Houston national forest: Cagle rec area campground is nice, on lake Conroe

Galveston Island state park: beach is cool, even when cold

Brazos bend

I second Stephen F Austin State Park. If the kids like bike riding on trails, it is a great location. Not as crowded as Brazos bend or Huntsville. I would recomend the screened shelter sites to keep wildlife out of your food.

I found this thread when looking for places to camp in November. I was looking for something close to Houston and went with Double Lake. Anyone been there before? Looks like FightinAg has...couple of questions for anyone that's been up there:

1. I booked a nonelectric 'RV' spot because there was only 1 small tent spot and it was already booked. The other 'tent' spots were all group spots and were like $75/night. I assume it is ok for me to use a tent on the RV spot without anyone complaining?

2. Is there nice areas to hike and bike up there? My wife and I would like to bike around, just curious about the roads and/or the trails.

3. Any other guidance is appreciated.

Thanks.

Huntsville is better in warm weather, because the swimming hole is warmer.

Galveston is nice, because there's nothing there except the beach. The showers are nice and hot. Camp on the 24 - 36 loop. Site 36 is closest to the bathrooms.

Stephen F. Austin is weak for water, but maybe a nice place for winter. Same for Lake Texana.

Brazos Bend is great of a crisp fall or spring weekend. Nice trails around the lake, and lots of gators.

Also look at Lake Houston Park near New Caney. Nice place for sitting around a campfire.

Thanks for the feedback... looks like I may be late to the game on this. I checked a lot of the State Parks and no one has openings really in November except for Thanksgiving time.

It's close to Houston. The Corps of Engineer parks are nice, as well as the ones run by Texas Parks & Wildlife. The lake is decent.

TMC, T-Town, The Church, Vivid, The Ritz and occasionally Colorado and Splendor are all good places to pitch a tent in the Tine.
