We are in the market for new living room furniture... I've heard bad things about the quality of furniture from Ashley... but not sure how true that is.

With Labor Day sales occurring, are there better options than Ashely, Furniture Row and Star that are not Super Expensive? Not looking for Amish type furniture. Just want a good Leather set (real leather, not bonded crap).

Furniture Source International in Wellborn. There's a Labor Day Sale coming up and also a 25% off coupon floating around.

Wise to stay away from Ashley. Especially their "bonded leather" products. Come to think of it, I don't believe they sell any real leather.

We like Howdy Home Furniture - we bought a (real) leather couch there over a year ago, and I believe its made in the U.S. They're just outside of town on 60 (west of town). Locally owned and great reviews

we'll be back soon looking for a chair

I worked for a furniture import warehouse one summer in college. We received & shipped products for most major brands - Ashley, Star, Rooms to go, Pottery Barn, Bel, Lane, Crate & Barrel. 95+ percent of it was imported from Malaysia or Indonesia and constructed out of veneered particle board (OSB or MDF). Even the sofas' internal support structure was made out of OSB. I was consistently surprised at the lack of real hardwood in anything. I am still shocked at how poorly these materials hold up, but everyone uses them, so I've just resorted to only building my own furniture since I can't find the real stuff.

What about Amish Furniture on Boonville?

Furniture Source International in Wellborn is great.

There is also a locally-owned (I think) furniture store behind the Lowes in Bryan that has some good stuff.

The Discount Furniture store on Harvey Mitchell also has some really good deals from time to time.

Unless something has changed in the last couple of years Furniture Source International is the opposite of "not super expensive." And I think unless you're in designer clothes expect to get ignored by the staff.

I'm still in love with the leather sofa I bought from Star about five years ago and it still looks awesome.

Star has some good stuff, but you'll pay for it. Good furniture is usually expensive.

Star or Amish, depending on what you're after. I always learn something new every time I go in Amish Furniture. Be prepared though, it's expensive. But it'll last you a lifetime. We decided to do Amish for solid wood pieces like tables and a hutch and Star for upholstered stuff. Star's best sales are 20% off and they do them off and on throughout the year.

actually, furniture in general has a HUGE markup. Furniture stores have adopted the car dealer's business plan and they will deal. Don't pay what they are asking.

Unless they have changed their business model, which is entirely possible since we purchased our bedroom suit in 2001, Haverty's does not deal. At all. The price is the price and they wouldn't budge on delivery either.

Mr. Nobody, who despises making major purchases without some give-and-take walked away over that policy. They let him. We could not find anything comparable to the suit we had chosen and ultimately went back to try for some budging on their part. They ultimately gave in on the delivery charge.

That said, we spent a lot of money on a beautiful set of all wood furniture that we have never considered replacing nor have we become tired of it.

eta: I just went and checked their site. They still sell it and the price has only gone up about $1300 total in those 15 years...

I beg to differ...

FSI was an unknown gem my wife and I stumbled upon after moving into our new home in Creek Meadows. We were looking for a furniture store that had good quality furniture at a reasonable price. I realize reasonable is relative to one's budget but for us we found it to be the most economical for the quality we were looking for. We looked at several places and talked to several sales reps In BCS and Houston including Star, Ashley, Bassett, Ethan Allen, Unfinished Furniture in Bryan and several other places online before coming back to FSI. All of their furniture is 25% off the sticker price and if you bring in their monthly coupon from the Insite Brazos magazine, you will get an additional 10% Off. Shipping is a flat $65 in town, regardless of how much you buy and they deliver within 5-10 days depending on location.

Now to address the comment about the staff...the first time I walked in I was wearing basketball shorts, a backwards cap, slides and a marvel tee shirt (my typical weekend wear), and was greeted by one of the sweatest ladies I think I've ever met (Diane). She was not only very welcoming, she was informative, helpful and guided us through the entire store showing us everything we were interested in seeing while giving us the run down on their business and pricing model. Additionally, she helped us measure several pieces and even offered suggestions of what might pair nicely with our particular taste. Furthermore, she was considerate of our time and gave my wife and I ample time to have private conversations and browse without feeling pressured to buy. When we returned the second time, Diane was not there but she had been kind enough to leave a list of the items we were interested in with one of the other employees, Stacy, who was just as pleasant and helpful. Moreover, we had several encounters with a number of the other staff, including a few of the guys working in their warehouse (less than a mile down the road...yes, we were escorted to their warehouse to look at a piece that wasn't on the showroom floor) and every single person we spoke with was friendly and accommodating in every way.

We ended up spending quite a bit of time looking through the store and making return visits before ultimately deciding on living room, dining room and bedroom furniture for our new home and I couldn't be more pleased. All of the furniture is unique, well crafted and of the highest quality materials and craftsmanship. I would put them on par with Louis Shanks but at a much better price without the reseller markup. Since they are the manufacturer, they can give the 25% discount on all their Furniture and customers who know about them reap the benefit. I will be hard pressed to buy furniture from any place else, and recently went back to get a few more pieces to complete the furnishing of our home.

I say all of this to say I was pretty disappointed in just about every other Furntiture option in town and only Bassett came close to meeting our needs, but again, at a higher price. If you haven't checked them out, stop by Furniture Source International and their huge showroom floor.

I should also add, all of their leather pieces are Italian leather, top grain. We bought a large oversized sectional and it's awesome. A cut above anything we saw at Star or Bassett. Don't sleep on FSI.

We went shopping for a new coffee table and end table last year and started at Ashley. Just about everything they had was Chinese made and looked slapped together. We also stopped at Star; I have always had good experiences there but they didn't really have anything we liked. On a whim, we stopped at Amish Furniture for Generations. They were more expensive than Ashley for sure, but not nearly as much as you would think. They have an enormous number of suppliers and customizable options. We ended up finding a set we liked in one of their catalogues and were actually able to get the end table built slightly larger to match the space it was going in.

Quality wise, there is no comparison. The Amish pieces are absolutely amazing, almost bordering on pieces of art. If you don't mind spending a little bit more and you can tolerate waiting a while, what you get is well worth both.

Do they do anything true mid century modern or Danish modern, or is it all more traditional style?

When you walk into the place, you are kind of put on mission style overload with a side of light oak stain. That said, I would classify the pieces we picked out as contemporary lines with some classic accents. We chose a dark walnut stain with a satin finish and brushed aluminum hardware. You definitely won't find Danish modern shapes like sharp angles, minimalist, metal legs, etc. There is definitely a wide variety though.

Any suggestions on where to find the 25% off coupon for FSI?

Thanks !
ThunderCatsHOOOO!
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You don't need a coupon for the 25% off. It's automatic when you go in. They take 25% off all sticker prices. There is an additional 10% off coupon in the Insite Brazos magazine every month. This Friday starts their Labor Day sale so no coupon needed to get the same 10% off on top of the 25% discount.
