It's a dumbass firing a gun in the woods behind shipwreck. The restaurant was cleared out as a precaution.

Not really and thats the issue. There's a creek with a bunch of trees.
How reliable is that info, that's not what was broadcast to other leos.

There's a colony of feral cats that lives back there. Maybe shooter read this article and thought he could double down on the "publicity".

Agree with RSA on the CHL drawing his/her weapon and heading outside. Not sure what they were thinking there.
I read it to say there was an off duty officer and a CHL holder, as in two separate people. The officer would not need a CHL.
I see what y'all mean now. It very well could have been two people drawing.
You just never know when someone might mouth off to you in a bar and leave you with no choice but to turn a minor altercation into a tense life-or-death scenario.

CHL guy 1 hears gunshots, draws gun and runs outside
CHL guy 2 hears gunshots, draws gun and runs outside and sees a guy running with a guy. BANG
If that's the way it happened, the CHL idiot needs to have his/her license revoked. It isn't a license to play vigilante. This is the same reason cops don't like open-carry, or even CHL on campus. Idiots abound and think a CHL deputizes them to investigate and enforce the law. A CHL doesn't give you the right to do anything unless you are directly threatened.
Only if the original person with a gun had gone into the restaurant with their weapon drawn would the CHL holder have been clear to pull their own weapon and neutralize the threat. Once the threat is neutralized (disarmed and/or dead), your legal clearance to play Barney Fife has left the room. Again, if this is how it went down. the CHL-holder is a fool that needs their license revoked and should probably be investigated for deadly conduct.

This is my biggest fear ... getting caught between an idiot criminal who can't shoot straight and a CHL who wants to be a hero.
Minor incident. Everyone ok. No evidence of gun shots. Thanks to everyone for help and concern.

Doesn't matter. One is sworn and licensed to uphold the law, the other is not. It would be no different if he was eating lunch with a physician and someone had a heart attack. One is clear to intervene; the best the other can do is call 911 in either situation.
