The other Nilgai thread got me thinking...

Say you were going to the king ranch and got to choose between a bull Nilgai or a Trophy Whitetail.

What would you choose?

Because I wouldn't have to bring a trailer full of ice chests.

I don't really know anything about Nilgai other than what they look like.

How is their meat? Is it like deer or more like beef?

I know they are big and you would probably need a vaulted ceiling for a shoulder mount. Or do a skull mount and look like you are in a cult.

Whitetail. No question. Nilgai bull on King Ranch will set you back less than 3K. Trophy Whitetail on King Ranch depending on the score will go 10K or more.

The answer is: It depends...

If I'm on a meat hunt, I'll take the nilgai, although I'd rather shoot a cow than a bull.

If I'm looking to put something on the wall then I'd opt for the whitetail.

Sure you can't do both?

My dad bought me a hunt on the king ranch in a charity auction. On the first day I shot my whitetail. It was a 2 day package and the ranch manager and I had talked a decent amount so he still took me out on the evening and morning hunts. I shot a doe and he was also going to let me shoot a nilgai. Saw one but before we could get close enough he hopped a fence and was gone.
