Flying from Dallas to Amarillo today on Southwest. Saw this pattern on the ground. Can't figure out what the heck it is. Seems obvious that someone cleared brush, but why in a wide strip shaped like a boot? Very odd.

Would love for someone to explain it.

It could be on the JA Ranch, from the location.

A fence line.

Could it be a high fenced ranch? And they clear cut a wide swath around the fence line to allow equipment to traverse the entire perimeter to lay fence. I can't scale how wide that is on my phone, but I have seen some where there will be a 10-20 yard clear cutting of brush all the way down the fence line.

Looks like it's about 100 meters across with a road on each side.

looks like senderos for hunting

Maybe the equipment operator was drunk.

It definitely follows a fence line. I think that the area that is not cleared is too rock to clear by machine.

I bet it is high fenced.

It is generally about 400' wide

rotate image 180 degrees and it has an alarming proportional resemblance to the outline of the state of West Virginia, affirming fears that the BDF is physically moving mountain tard into our great state.

deeply disturbing.

Bunch of trees knocked down. Looks like somebody took a bulldozer to the place to clear land for cattle.

Looks like they wanted to discourage the neighbor from putting a stand on the fence line

Almost looks like a controlled burn along all the fence lines. The gray appearance to the brush and soil makes me think burn.

If I had to guess, I would guess that at some point in the last decade there was a fire and they dozed lots of different lines to contain it.

I guess my eyes have finally given out. I can't see what the OP is talking about. I did find a windmill and water tank though.

Yeah. Looks like they either dozed or burned the fence line in a wide swath.

Did that area burn in the wildfires a few year back? Could it be fire breaks a land owner tried to do himself?

I'd guess that's preliminary clearing for a windfarm.

Few things. First, I looked again, I think it's too far east to be the JA. Zooming in, I wonder if it was done with a mulcher. Last, I don't think wind farm. They tend to build in paralell rows.

300 -- 500' wide is one heck of a fire break.

A fire break would be to protect something. What in there is being protected?

Also notice that the pattern crosses river beds.

And as said above, it looks to be 400 feet wide, when most fire breaks are maybe 40 feet wide.

Yeah, I know once a fire gets to spotting they can jump hundreds of feet at a time. Don't know that area really well at all, but not sure if brush over bare soil is prone to spotting.

Thankfully I've never dealt with a spotting fire.

I think you're looking at a different geologic formation. Look at the red/orange rocks/soil. It's in the creek beds and in the areas with more erosion. I think the gray colored soil is the last remnants of an overlying formation. Those scaly areas are more of that younger section.

The scaley features looks more like ruins/Rock walls of some sort. Any chance they are old corrals?

I expanded the search out. Similar areas are nearby. I'm going to have to say geological until proven otherwise for the gray stuff
