At least that is what I hoope it is! The FIL thought it was a shot put because he figured there would be no way a cannon ball of age would be in this condition. I cleaned it up a little and found the inscriptions.

I have heard stories of cannon balls being found and unexploded ordnance demo experts being sent in to demolish the find, so I wont give away the location... as I would like to keep this relic, if I can do so safely.

Any OB'ers have any further info on this for me? It was found about 50 yards from the Clear Fork of the Brazos River near a low water crossing. This area was covered with Indians, settlers, and US Army posts in the 1850's. It was in the side of the flood water bank, burried completly in the dirt.

Thats a shot, as in a shot put.

For track & field.

Edit: Its a 12 lber, which is the size that boys in high school throw. The number 5.45 is the weight in kilos. The 115mm is the diameter.

Edit again: I was a shot putter & discus thrower for 11 years

a quick search on the internet suggests it is a steel ball used in a grinding machine, possibly. Ore grinders use large steel balls like that.

It's more likely that it was hammer throw equipment. A shot wouldn't have screw holes like that

They would have dang sure made good cannonballs though. I once saw one act as a cannonball and smack a girl right in the back of the head who was standing off the side not paying attention.

A lot of the cheaper shots that high schoolers use do have those holes. The ones I threw back then did.

So much fail in the OP....so incredibly awesome.

I love this logic:

Yeah, you know the reason they send those guys out there don't you? BECAUSE IT'S UNEXPLODED ORDINANCE!!
This happens every so often:

Also a very good thing the army manufactured and stamped a 5.45 kg cannonball.

While I find it humorous myself, is it necessary to be such an ******* about it?

Just delete this thread and any knowledge to the contrary and keep telling everyone you found a cannon ball. Life is a lot more interesting without google searches getting in the way of a good story.

Nice thread on the Aggieland Board (aka the cry to mamma about everything board) about someone that found what looks to be an Apache training round near the Brazos.

Let me go looking....

Ive had so many good laughs over the years on this board, glad I finally got to contribute to the masses....as heart breaking as it is. I would think the likely hood of finding a shot put burried in BFE Texas is less than finding a cannon ball.

Back in 1983 I found a live WWII rifle grenade, similar to picture, on my grandparents place in Mineral Wells.
