So how hard is it to take a 2d mkv file and watch it with this

Don't know what the Samsung Gear is, but I would use MakeMKV to convert to MKV file then Handbrake to convert the MKV to a MP4. MP4 is pretty universal.

Download VaR's VR player.
It will play mkv files and is highly configurable.
My friend told me about it after he was raving about pirating VR porn. He's a weirdo but the player works well for non-x-rated films, too.

Ended up using moon player. Worked great.

I am sure I blocked like a dork but it did a great job of removing me from the whole experience of being on a plane.

Basically if you can't see the seat back 2in from your face, it isn't 2 in from your face
