Regardless of WHY you want to use it, there is enough evidence/articles out there indicating that TOR is no longer secure enough to guarantee privacy,

Yup, and using it might actually flag you as a person of interest to anyone who might be watching. Using a VPN is likely a better way of safeguarding your privacy, assuming of course that you are using a legitimate one.

If you are looking for "privacy" I would suggest subscribing to a VPN service.

I use "Private Internet Access" and am very happy with it. It has received good reviews across the board, and is rather affordable.

Another vote for Private Internet Access. I've been using them for the past 2 years and they have servers all over the world. They're also very reasonably priced @ <$50/yr.

In fact, my IP shows I'm from Hong Kong as I post this from Dallas.

I'd also recommend you test your vpn at ipleak dot net and quickly modify your browser config to evade WebRTC detection.

VPN is the only thing that makes sense these days.

I know there are a few missionary groups out there who use Tor to communicate in "closed" countries, and there are journalists who will use it to avoid authorities in countries without freedom of the press. Apart from that the network is mostly scam artists, hackers, drug markets, and child porn. There probably isn't much of a legitimate use for it if you live in the United States and have access to a VPN service.

Or use both.

Using just tor is vulnerable to your ISP knowing you are using TOR. If you use a VPN, you link through your ISP is encrypted so they don't see you are going to a TOR entry node.

But using TOR, if you want complete anonymity you have to work at it. Create a new persona, never access your real personal accounts, use prepaid cards, and pry run it in a VM you regularly delete.
