So you would need line of sight with the emitter, right?

I think so. But it seems like you could link it to multiple light sources so that it'd almost always in line of sight. According to the guy in the Ted talk, it works even at super low levels that look "off".

A friend of my Dad's was working on something like this about 15 years ago. His idea was centered around data availability and tracking in hospitals, using the overhead lights to communicate with devices. They got it working pretty well, but it never caught on
