What service do you have? And where do you live?

Consolidated Communications. I'm in Katy, outskirts of Houston. $69/m, no data cap. I'm lucky enough to already be on their fiber ring when they started offering gigabit service to everyone with FTTH.

at what point does it become too much??

I understand that streaming content is growing exponentially right now but i have 100mbps download speed and I have not once noticed that I needed faster internet speeds. Except just to have faster speeds.

is this supposed to be for downloading huge 4k videos and things like that?

You people would lose your mind out here in the country.

$74 for 3 down, 1 up, and no cap.

Funny thing is, I literally have cows right behind my house.

Who knows what kind of services will develop with widespread access to high internet speeds.

Could you imagine getting all the video streams from a football game at the same time, allowing you to pick and choose which angle you want to watch at? You could do your own replay reviews with multi angle shots. Or run an overhead/spidercam view next to a endzone camera to see how plays develop from multiple perspectives.

Getting multiple high quality streams like that would chew up some bandwidth. Since we don't have widespread access yet though, services aren't being developed. So right now it's easy to question the point.

Similarly, what if we had decided that VHS was good enough?

$69 for 15 down, 5 up in rural Parker county. When it actually works of course.

It's funny, after many technical iterations people still question the need for faster bandwidth and computation along with larger storage capabilities.

Stop forgetting that engineers will design and develop applications or appliances to consume the new resources.

Holy smokes I wonder how long it would take to download a brand new ps4 game with those speeds

I'm paying $56 for 5 down and 1.5 up for cable internet right in the middle of Longview. Where I work, we pay $76 for 5 down and 1.5 up over WISP (rural).

It's total BS, but I would rather have slower speeds than data caps. I stream whatever I want right now with no worries.

How do you get it in the Houston area?
Shows on their website that Houston doesn't even have it yet....?

That's almost exactly what I get here in Dallas on AT&T Gigapower. Complete overkill!

I'm in Katy. I don't think Consolidated provides much service inside Houston city limits. Maybe that's why? I don't know. They told me they've started offering it to everyone in Texas who has fiber to the home already. I have a new home so I've had FTTH since I moved here, previously had their 100Mb service.

Are you "lucky" enough to be on Rise Broadband too?

No, we have Cirra. Afraid to try something else because it seems like they all suck. Maybe it's just WISP's in general.

AT&T GIgapower... 1 gig up/down for 100/month(+tax)

Plus house is hard wired throughout. Normally see 850-925 MBPS both ways. Have been seeing 300-350 MBPS over AC based WiFi.

maybe I can finally talk the wife into cutting the cable cord.

24 down 1.5 up on uverse. No gigapower here yet. It's only like 30 bucks a month so at least I have that going for me. Which is nice.

Also on AT&T Gigapower but I've been underwhelmed with my speeds over wifi on my iPad and phone. Just ran a test using Speedtest's app and I'm only getting 40 mbps down and up standing right next to my AC modem/router and it drops to 20 on the other side of the house.

Why would I not be getting the 300+ others seem to get?

I am averaging 800-950 on wired connection like others though.

What kind of band/signal are you using on WiFi?

2.4 GHZ? 5 GHZ?

Does the iPAD use wireless A/B/G/N? Or AC?

You will not see the ultra fast speeds on WiFi unless you are using AC wireless....

And i would highly recommend 5 GHZ band if you can, there is less interference.

Yep - gotta use AC

My modem/router is a Pace 5268AC so it is 80211ac. Just ran more tests:

HTC One M9 = 65 mbps down
iPad 4 = 41 mpbs down

Both measured back to back in same spot standing next to router.

Looks like IPAD 4 does not have an AC antenna in it, so you'll never get AC numbers

phone does... so it should be faster

Thanks. Searched for the same info before posting but couldn't find it for some reason.

Still makes me wonder why I wouldn't get faster than 65 on my phone since it is ac but then I really don't care since that is plenty fast for phone. iPad lags quite a bit though.

I'm in Katy as well with Consolidated! Have you upgraded yet? Was there any type of fee associated with that?
Nope, no fee or anything. They just come and swap out the box on the outside of your house, set you up with a new wireless router (I chose to stick with my own though) and that's it.
