Does anyone know a decent PC software package for making a simple slideshow video that will cycle through a bunch of photos with background music? A teacher friend is looking for something to put together an end-of-year slideshow of the class, and in the past she's used iPhoto but the school switched to PCs this year so she needs to find something else. If it's free that would be awesome, and ease-of-use is probably more important than having a huge number of features.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Windows Essentials, free, includes Windows Movie Maker. It is more than capable of making a slide show with music.

Serious question.

Open Office is free and has a PowerPoint ripoff.

Powerpoint is probably harder to use for a slideshow of photos. Powerpoint handles photos well, but not so well in bulk - copy/paste is really slow for a project like this.

Most video editors have a slideshow function. They work like:

1. open a slideshow project
2. import all the photos at once
3. move 'em around for the correct sequence
4. add a title slide and add captions for each photo
5. apply a random set of transitions
6. import music
7. make it a playable file
