Looking to kill some time. What is the newest "coolest" MMO that everyone is playing. Im interested in all types of genres. Was thinking Star wars or elder scrolls. but dont know much of either or any other really.

Also I have never played an MMO before so I have no biases

Guild Wars 2 is really damn fun. And it is a one-time buy so no subscriptions or in-game purchases.

Just play WoW like everyone else. I'm pretty sure a "WoW Killer" has come out once a year since the game opened, and I don't think I can name one of them off the top of my head.

It's not the newest, but it's the most played.

I would probably go with Star Wars. I'm waiting on Wildstar to redo the entire PvP scene before I go back, but it definitely has the most fun combat system out of anything to come out recently. WoW PvP is still just as terrible as MoP to me so I quit that pretty quick.

WildStar is a ghost town now. Got an email to reactivate my account for free for seven days and decided to see what was going on with it these days. It was pretty sad, especially considering that they've consolidated down to only one regular and one PVP server for the US.

I think there is a distinct lack of sustainable MMOs, I think WoW might've perfected and essentially killed the genre.

It attracts a certain type of person, and those types of people already have thousands of hours invested in WoW, so something would have to come along that is significantly better. One of the best MMOs from a structure standpoint that I've played was actually Star Wars Galaxies (Galaxies, not Old Republic, haven't played that one). If they would have had a more in depth story and questing system in that game, then WoW wouldn't even be here today.

You could create legitimately any character mix you wanted. Too bad they effed it all up.

Totally agree with you on Star Wars Galaxies.....that game had such potential and they totally F'd it up. Played for a few years before it went totally to ****. It could've been epic. Even with all its flaws, I thought it was a good game for many years until the NGE/CU or whatever the hell they called it 100% ruined the game

I purchased WoW the night it came out, I think November '04. I still remember making my way to Iron Forge and being the only player in there.

Weird, wild stuff.

It is amazing that it still going strong. Have they overhauled the graphics?

I've tried most and hated anything not made by Mythic. As luck may have it Mark Jacobs is developing another game called Camelit Unchained. It's in Alpha right now. Scheduled beta is supposed to be July. It's early but it's the best hope of a solid PvP/RvR game that we have.

Yeah, I guess that is my big fear. I followed some of them like SWTOR and rifts and warhammer. They all seem to be decent and then everyone just vacates them. I havent seen one sustain anywhere close to its height aside from WoW and I am opposed to WoW on general principal...

I am looking at Elder Scrolls right now. I love the ES world and this one seems to be fine. I just wonder what the long term outlook is.

Also, I am not big into PvP at all. I prefer coop type play more than competitive.

For the Sand box/SWG crowd check out The Repopulation. Currently in late alpha but it is very much SWG done right.

Not for the general public it is not terribly simple or friendly.

For those that loved Galaxies before they messed it up with the combat upgrade you might want to check out swgawakening.com A group of developers as resurrected the game pre-combat upgrade. I'v been playing for a couple of weeks and its as good as I remember. They are up to 3000 accounts so far and growing.

Swgemu.com. has been going for a while. I used to play a bit of SWG there, but haven't really logged on in the last 6 months or so.

Guild Wars 2 is pretty fun. It's great to buy once, and drop every once in awhile. All the top gear is cosmetic, so questing is for the materials to make the gear you want instead of the power of the gear. WvWvW is great, and I just got into PvP last weekend and had a blast. ArenaNet has streamlined many aspects of the game. As my buddy put it, it is fun to level and explore the game with one character, but after that it's pretty boring. So they have insta level 20 items and other items that grant you a single level, and all of them are easy to acquire.

WvWvW = World vs World vs World, where 3 servers face against each other in 4 different maps that can be switched between at will. There is Zerging with a big force, and then there is small group play where you can capture camps, or back capping camps.

SWTOR was fun before it went F2P.

WoW is the easy choice.

GW2 is ok, but it does not follow the holy trinity system (tank, dps, healer) and it is more casual.

I played LOTRO for about a year when I seemed to have a lot more free time. I had nothing but a lot of fun playing it.

I will have to check out SWG awakening. Never played it the first go around but I miss the pre-Wow landscape.

Will also check out Repopulation. Heard it sucked.

There is an MMO called Crowfall that is in dev and looks interesting to me.

Never played DAOC either but it had a good following.

I played UO and Shadowbane to a lesser extent before WoW took over.

Ok that looks cool. It may be worth the $36 to check it out.

SWG went through 3 phases. Original game, then the Combat Upgrade where they added a strange level system that was tied to the skills you chose in each profession (for instance 2 maxed out combat professions would get you to lvl 80, 1 combat prof and 1 crafting prof would make you like lvl 50). I don't remember the exact details of how it worked, it's been way to long since I played it. Then finally the NGE (New Game Experience) where they tried to make WoW in space. The NGE was basically a completely different game with a rigid class system, quests, etc.

SWG is why I don't play games made by SOE.

The only MMO i currently play is Guild Wars 2. I like it because it's casual and I think the community is more mature/less trollish than in other MMOs I've played. The structured PvP (a/k/a warzones/battlegrounds in other MMOs) in this game is completely balanced as far as level/gear. Essentially the only cap is your own skill level.

There are numerous dungeons you can run with a group of 5 people. There are massive world boss events that take well over 100 people to kill. There are guild activities if you want to do that kind of thing. The primary MMO aspects GW2 is lacking are traditional raids and no party specializations (a/k/a the trinity). There is no tank/healer/dps dynamic in GW2. You can make your character a support specialist (which are needed for clearing some of the harder content), but you will still be responsible for doing damage and keeping yourself alive.

Over the years I played SWG, WoW, SWTOR and other flash-in-the-pan MMOs, and I have to rate the PvP in GW2 the best I've seen. It's incredibly well balanced and diverse. Every class has multiple specs that are competitive.

Other positives: The game is completely free to play. The only content you have to pay for after the initial cost is old world event story lines if you weren't around when they were initially launched. Also, an expansion will be coming out relatively soon. They are NOT increasing the level cap, and according to their developers they never will. Probably the biggest thing I hated about WoW was leveling my characters again after every x-pack.

Yeah it has received a pretty sizeable backing on kickstarter. The concepts all sound very cool but I just hope the implementation doesn't kill it (like with most).

The nation hierarchy reminds me a lot of Shadowbane and while that game was horrible in so many ways the political landscape and progression of a server from a gulid conquer perspective was very interesting.

I know it's jazzed up to get backers but I will keep an eye on it for sure.

Ok I need to revisit this thread. I never did try anything. Playing World of warhsips now but burning out fast already. Looking for something more storybased. So now looking at LOTRO, the old republic and MAYBE elder scrolls online. I want something that I dont need to pay up front for. Maybe later if really like it but initially free to play is the route for me.

Mainly just looking for a good time killer until Fallout 4 comes out. Just looking to see if anyone has any new updated recs or thoughts.

I know I can just DL them all and try them but My data cap for interwebs is tiny and dont wanna overload it. ESO is supposed to be 80 GB by itself. I get 250 a month....

I went back to wildstar recently just because F2P is coming, but honestly I wouldn't recommend until F2P comes and that may be a couple months.

Doesn't SWTOR have some type of expansion coming or something? I haven't paid attention.

I havent't played some of those games but TOR currently has boosted xp for class missions for subscribers. Each class has it's own story, sort of like 8 different KOTOR's. There is also a new xpac in october that will add additional story content. The game itself is very slow in terms of leveling and in general unless you are a subscriber, but that's how most of the free to play models work these days. It was enjoyable though and the stories are very well done and really cool. Combat always felt bulky to me compared to other games. I eventually left because I didn't enjoy bulky end game and there are some technical issues the dev team literally never dealt with and flat stopped responding to players about.
