Dr. Randall Davis, a Texas A&M University at Galveston professor and marine biologist, and his colleagues will soon be equipping Weddell seals with video and data recorders to learn how these deep-diving creatures are able to return from long distances to their breathing holes in the ice. The results could confirm that Weddell seals have internal compasses much like homing pigeons and they may be using the Earth's magnetic field for directions.

Learn more about Davis's study on Weddell seals in Antarctica.
