When I plug in my external harddrive, this pops up and won't open. Please help! Thank you.

The USB circuitry in the drive has probably failed. That happens. Or the power supply has failed.

External drives suck. Might be able to remove the hard drive and put it in another hard drive case.

Thanks for the response. Not what I was hoping to hear!

Do you hear/feel that the hard drive is spinning when powered on? If so - the drive is probably good and he data is not lost. You'll need to mount the drive in another case to use it.

External cases are cheap, moving the innards isn't a difficult task

First thing - you need to know 3.5 inch drive or 2.5 inch drive? That dimension is the width. 3.5 inch external drives always have a power supply. Most 2.5 inch externals get their power from the USB.

Second - you gotta open the old case and remove the old drive.

Third - move the old into the new.

Additional option - buy a hard drive dock. They are super easy to use because you don't actually mount the drive. Example:

If the hard drive is spinning up, you may need to initialize the drive under disk manager. The drive should spin up as soon as power is applied. Also check your usb drivers.
