What do you guys do with your old computers? I have a gaming laptop that sells for less than $120 and another gaming desktop that is over 8 years old and may sell for less than $400. Do you always go through all the effort to wipe 'em then put 'em on ebay or do you just run 'em into the ground and chuck 'em?

Who would pay $400 for an 8 year old desktop, no matter how snazzy it was?

I usually format/wipe and give to Goodwill.

Realistically, an 8 year old desktop will fetch about $100 tops. I would wipe the drives (DBAN), format it with something, and give it to Goodwill as Spicewood says

Do you guys bother reinstalling windows/whatever on the machines before donating them? I've got 9 machines (personal/work/friends) that need to be wiped for donation and I've been going back and forth on it. On the one hand, it definitely makes the machines more usable, on the other hand I'm not getting paid to do this and, on that many machines, we're talking about a significant time investment to install the OS.

My hard drives on my laptop are fairly decent sized so I just took them out and I'm going to get a couple of enclosures. Recycled the laptops themselves.

When I finish my build, I'll be taking my old rig over to my grandmother's house. She loves to check Facebook on it, but complains that her computer never works right (she's on a machine that shipped with Windows ME). I think my 5 year old budget build will do nicely for her.

Disarmer, have you thought about selling it? You could probably get around $400 according to the OP.
