Ags,

I'm looking to expand the wireless coverage at a friend's house. He has Uverse and one of those 2wire residential gateways.

Here are the options I have so far:

Option 1

Purchase one of these access points:
http://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-UniFi-Access-UAP-LR-US-Version/dp/B005H4CDF4

Then using a 500mbps powerline adapter to set it up upstairs (2 story house).

Option 2

Purchase this wireless powerline adapter kit:
http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WPA4220KIT-ADVANCED-Universal-Powerline/dp/B00HSQAIQU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410895792&sr=8-2&keywords=TL-WPA4220

and possible adding another wireless adapter later.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks!

Are there other Wi-Fi networks close by? If so, chances are you just need to switch the network to a different channel. You can log into the router from a computer connected to the router via Ethernet cable by typing 192.168.1.254 in your browser and change the channel under "home network". If you're on channel 1 or 10, try channel 6.

There also a Wi-Fi analyzer app you can download to show you what networks are in your area and what channel they're using, so I recommend looking at that and finding an available channel that way too.

Is there a particular reason you're sticking with the Uverse router and adding access points?

It is obviously more costly, but in terms of speed, coverage, and functionality you would be far far far better off starting by disabling wifi on the Uverse router and adding a powerful WiFi router.

Depending on the size of the house and if you still have problems, and with a top of the line router you may not, you can extend using wifi extenders.

The newer uverse routers are surprisingly strong, actually. If you do go with your own router though, see if you can get rid of the uverse router altogether so you can afford the hardware fee uverse tacks on

No particular reason. Getting rid of the uverse router sounds like a great idea. I hate that thing....ha.

I found instructions on how to set up the 2wire gateway as a MODEM only.
But I just don't think a router line this one will cover both floors.

What do y'all think?

House is about 4100 sq ft

Thanks for your help.

that would depend on the placement of the router. Will it be in a corner of the house, or near the center?

That paired with a wifi extender like this might be enough.

4100sqft is a pretty big space to cover, but not impossible.

The router is currently in a corner of the house...which obviously doesn't help the situation.
Will probably purchase both devices and see how it goes.

Thanks for your help.
