Just saw this posted in the Premium Pub. It immediately reminds me of the annual Haj tramplings in Mecca.

Which situation is dumb, and which one is dumber? Hard choice here.

The Hajj is sadder, because at this point the Saudis have turned Mecca into Vegas 2.0.

Warning, serious discussion below:

The pagan pilgrimage to the Kabah was a lucrative business for those in power in Mecca in Muhammad's time. After they were forced to capitulate following the Muslim-Quraysh war, I'm sure many of those wealthy people of the Quraysh tribe, specifically of the Umayyad clan, were angry about the loss of trade revenue coming in from pilgrims. There's been a lot of modern research indicating that Mecca wasn't the great trading hub we used to think it was, because it doesn't really lie on any of the major trading routes that connect Ethiopian goods from the sea to Yemen to caravan lines going towards Syria and the Byzantine Empire. However, the presence of the Kabah and the seasonal pilgrimage made Mecca a trade hub separate from these things. Eventually after Muhammad's cousin, Ali, died, the Umayyads took power again (this time as Muslims rather than pagans) and wanted to continue to profit off the lucrative business of pilgrimage.

The rest, as they say, is history. The Saudis are doing the same thing. The Hajj is one of the most bankable scams in all of Islam. Originally the Shias were able to dodge this, because in Shia belief the pilgrimage was not to the Kabah but rather to Muhammad, and following Muhammad to the Imams who were the grandsons and great grandsons of Muhammad, but the Twelver Shia Imams are dead and they now make pilgrimage to their tombs. The Ismailis are the only sect with a living Imamate and their view on Hajj is to go visit the Imam.

Nothing can unite the R&P board like Baylor.
