Had a teacher in high school who was a big book fan and said that OHMSS was the closest to Ian Fleming's work than any of the other films.

Die Another Day has the worst villain, the worst gadget (an invisible car? wtf), the worst Bond Girl (sorry Halle Berry), Brosnan's worst performance and the most God-awful theme song in the entire franchise. Seriously, Madonna can go f*** herself for that song.

That movie....just thinking about it makes me angry.

Another Way to Die (Jack White and Alicia Keys) is probably worse.

Agreed and like I said, its a special hate for Lazenby. And his chin. and the kilt. Place any other Bond actor in there and I'd be very happy with the film. Diana Rigg is still one of the best Bond girls

Guess I was slow, but just realized She is Oleanna Tyrell on GOT.

As a book reader myself, I would agree with that take. Most of the other movies only had the title in common with the book/short story on which they were ostensibly based. Of all the Bond movies I'd like to see remade to follow the book exactly, I'd pick You Only Live Twice and The Spy Who Loved Me.

Yes....Moonraker was pretty bad (but definitely not the worst in my opinion), but it is special to me because it was the first Bond I remember seeing at the theater (yes..I have the olds).

Was Star Wars to blame?

One part of the Moonraker legend that is true is that the film was rushed into production in response to the success of Star Wars two years previously. In a post-Luke Skywalker paradigm space was suddenly sexy and Bond producer Albert R Broccoli decided to square off a little corner of the galaxy exclusively for 007. He shelved plans to follow 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me with For Your Eyes Only (which would finally see daylight in 1981) and instead had veteran screenwriter Christopher Wood cobble together a science fiction plot (very) loosely based on Ian Fleming's Moonraker.

That part is certainly true. The end credits of The Spy Who Loved Me proclaim that James Bond will return in For Your Eyes Only.

Moonraker was also my first theater Bond, so it holds a special place for me. And also the Amazon boat chase was fantastic. Oh yeah, Holly Goodhead.

Die Another Day and View to a Kill are my bottom 2.

Die Another Day was the dumbest Bond film I've seen. It was full of "no one gives a damn anymore".

As a book reader myself, I would agree with OHMSS being pretty close to the tone of the novels - Craig's Casino Royale was as well.

I grew up with Brosnan as my Bond, but the only one of his i watch consistently is Goldeneye...that movie is still a lot of fun.

Siskel and Ebert review A View To A Kill:

(Keep watching all the way to end. Jamie Lee Curtis! Yow!)

Just for fun, I am going to say Peter Sellers version of Casino Royale.

You could throw a hat over A View to a Kill, License to Kill, The World is Not Enough, Die another Day and Tomorrow Never Dies. Brutally bad villains (seriously Max Zorin and the newspaper dude? are you kidding?) brutally bad tech, brutally bad movies. Brosnan's last three movies even have horrible titles. Is it Die Another Tomorrow? The World never Dies? Tomorrow is another Day? Might as well have been.

I actually like OHMSS and think Lazenby gets a bad rap.

I've always considered myself a big Bond fan, but the last time I saw a marathon on TV I realized most Bond movies actually suck. When they hit, they are great, but most don't and are really bad.

Id have to go with "The Man With the Golden Gun". The only reason is because James effing Bond drove an AMC Hornet X and an AMC Matador in that movie. AMC...WTF?!?!

The Man With the Golden Gun is actually my guilty pleasure Bond movie. I loved the locations, and it has the hottest Bond girls IMO. And Knick Knack is so terribly great.

For me it's the last three Brosnan movies and the Dalton movies. All snoozers. License to Kill was a terrible Scarface ripoff.

We did a Bondathon in college and watched all of them in a row that were out at the time. We all agreed On Her Majesty's Secret Service was the worse.

To me, it comes down to several factors:

Who played Bond?
Was the script any good?
What Bond girl or girls made an appearance? More on that later.
What sort of cool stuff did Q give to Bond?
What was the car?
Any epic chase scenes or other action we haven't seen before?
Is the villain a great villain and is their plan something that requires someone with Bond's training to stop the villain or could a regular government agency have handled it?
Is the plan really sinister and also somewhat plausible (without a total suspension of disbelief...maybe just partial suspension of disbelief)?

Drax's plan in Moonraker is terrible for the fact that it is impossible. He built an ISS and had 9 shuttles that nobody in the world knew about and was going to be able to kill billions of people with the materials derived from a rare orchid?

The "we have found a bunch of Adam and Eve substitutes to repopulate the world and start over" idea isn't terrible, but who was going to clean up 5 billion dead bodies? Those 20 people on the space station? The entire planet would have stank like roadkill when they got back and in a year the planet would be covered in vultures and rats and other critters.

Moonraker may be the worst just for that.

Plus, when NASA suddenly realized there was a space station in orbit, they launched a shuttle in about an hour. The reality is we couldn't get one off the ground for weeks sometimes due to the slightest issues not being addressed.

Back to Bond girls...

Sometimes the Bond girl is great. She is an ally, or she is a villain. And sometimes they change sides.

Barbara Bach was a classic Bond girl. Gorgeous and resourceful and also a spy. The Spy Who Loved Me was with her, and also that hot helicopter pilot that ended up getting shot down with a missile from the underwater Lotus.

Grace Jones in View To A Kill was a terrible Bond girl. I get that she was some kind of big deal at the time, but Bond wouldn't sleep with some chick that looked like Will Smith in his rapper days.

Helicopter pilot and boat driver that got shot down in The Spy Who loved Me was Caroline Munro.

The most gorgeous Bond girl.......ever.

Yeah, I wish she had been in a Bond movie where she was the main Bond girl.
