The Thin Red Line was amazing.

Zero Dark Thirty, does it count?

Lone Survivor

And I liked courage under Fire, which came out exactly 20 years ago.

Three movies in the last 20 years that moved me: We Were Soldiers, American Sniper, Taking Chance.

Do documentaries count? Because if they do, Restrepo wins this rather handily IMO.

If not, then Black Hawk Down followed closely by We Were Soldiers.

Just so we know the rules, do you mean American wars?

Troy was a war movie, as was braveheart (21 years ago)

Great: Troy, Master & Commander, we were Soldiers, saving private Ryan

Good: tears of the sun, fury, zero dark thirty, American sniper, the Alamo(cause I'm from Texas) Unbroken,

I'm sure there are more.

Any war I guess.

300 was pretty good so that should make the list.

Off the top of my head these are the ones I recall seeing in about the defined time frame

Saving Private Ryan (specifically the D-Day sequence at the beginning)
The Patriot
We Were Soldiers
Enemy At the Gates
Pearl Harbor (for the warbird sequences, the other stuff is laughable)
Troy
Fury
Black Hawk Down
Zero Dark Thirty
Letters From Iwo Jima
The Last Samurai
Master and Commander
Downfall
Valkyrie
Inglorious Basterds
Defiance
American Sniper
Lone Survivor
Flyboys

I did not put these in any particular order and am not really ranking them, but of these, my favorites are The Patriot, Downfall, Letters From Iwo Jima, and We Were Soldiers.

I am not including The Thin Red Line as I view that meandering mess as a National Geographic special on drugs where an occasional soldier walks by or you see something related to some long ago war, not even sure which one given how much exposition there is to define why these soldiers are killing each other.

nobody mentioned the other Eastwood one Flags of Our Fathers. There are elements of the film I don't like but the assault on Iwo was pretty good.

Also pretty amazing that he made both sides of that story the same year with Flags and Letters both released in 2006.

I actually liked Thirteen Hours a lot. And that's after Michael Bay lost my respect.

And just because it's military, I liked Act of Valor.

Ok, then I will amend my lengthy list above to include both Band of Brothers and The Pacific. And both are among my favorites over this time period.

Funny that The Hurt Locker is the only war movie to win best picture in the last 20 years but hasn't been mentioned...unless LOTR ROTK is a war movie

Many of the vets I know loathe the hurt locker. Idk why, it's not as anti-war as some other war films.

ditto. well some of it is the politics....most i know just say it's unrealistic and overly dramatized.

for example:
- single unit vehicle driving alone through the desert comes upon blakcwater type commandos - nobody drives alone
- bomb technician suddenly becomes a sniper and makes kills from 900 yards out easily
- splitting up a team of 2 to hunt a bomber, each man walks alone in a dark alley
- abandoning their working Humvee to hide in an iraqi house
