First images appeared and I wanted to distinguish between the live action and the anime movies. Discussion for those can be found in the anime thread.

Anyway here's the first image, there may have been a thread way back in the day but I couldn't find it.

What are ya'll's thoughts on this? Hollywood has a terrible track record so far with anime/manga based shows so far...(DB:Evolution, the Last Airbender, etc...).

I'm still skeptical about this, but that the jacket and hair are very much Motoko. I'm still not clear though on if this is an adaptation of the manga or the an original story.

Also, I'm hoping they are aiming at an older audience. DBZ and shows like it had a younger audience from the get go, but given the nature of the show I would imagine that they are.

A mature PG-13 would be awesome. I actually haven't seen any of the anime so I don't know how mature the content is...

Was the original a movie, a several movies, or a series?

the absolute original was a series I think. But there have been movies and a reboot series since then.

The original was a movie, unless you're talking manga series.

I stand corrected, I guess I'll have to see it to form an opinion and to know what the heck I'm talking about.

The original was a movie (Ghost in the Shell) and the second movie (Ghost in the Shell: Innocence) are a separate continuity from the TV anime. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex's First and Second Gigs (read gigs as seasons) along with the movie Solid State Society are separate. The latest series Ghost in the Shell: Arise and Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie is supposed to take place prior to the manga and original movie IIRC as it deals more with the forming of Section 9.

And there is your nerd moment for the day.

As to content wise, the movies IIRC have a fair amount of nakedness/nudity in it and the various series had a fair amount of violence. Subject matter deals with things ranging from sexbots, artificial intelligence, espionage, immigration, personal rights, and a bunch of other things. I personally think that Stand Alone Complex is probably one of the deeper series that speculate on such things.

I've never been into anime/manga. I just don't get it I guess...

That said, I recently watched Akira and thought it was awesome. So I decided to watch Ghost in the Shell after because it's just as famous and highly recommended. I just thought it was boring. I don't even really remember what it was about. But I'm sure a big budget movie of it could be cool.

I enjoyed the movie but as said earlier I think the more complex themes are fleshed out better in the SAC first gig series. Its one of my favorites to refer people too if they're hesitant to watch anime because they think it's all giant robots and bleach. It's not inception level like death note's ridiculous chess moves or exhausting like naruto because it has a set beginning and end.

There is already "Hollywood whitewashing" talk going around of course. Why couldn't they get a Japanese or other Asian actress to play the part instead of ScarJo? I have the original movie and also watched the SAC series so it does seem a bit odd to me (though i know ScarJo is eye candy and gets butts in theater seats).

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but to a certain extent I do wonder why cast Aramaki with an Asian actor but Batou, Kusanagi, and likely the rest of the team with actors clearly not Asian. Knowing the character histories, I can only assume that their backgrounds will be changed to some extent to make it more believable in regards to the actor playing the character.

I hate to say this but is there a single Japanese actress that would pull in the people that Scarlett does?

So I saw one a long time ago where at the end she is hiding behind columns and a big ass robot is shooting the crap out of the column she is standing behind. Is that the original movie?

Yeah what you are describing sounds like the original movie.

In Hollywood? Doubt it. I'm not sure if we went beyond Japanese to any Asian actress that anyone would be able to do that based on name alone.

Yeah what you are describing sounds like the original movie.
That one had a buttload of nudity too. I might go see this if Scarlett Johansson sticks true to that part!

While I think that'd be a selling point for many, something tells me they will probably scale that back if it is in at all. But I won't complain if it ends up happening.

Hopefully ScarJo does a lot of topless scenes to keep with the original anime.

didn't she do a bunch of scenes like that in Under the Skin.

What was the last good movie in which she was the main star? Can't count the Avenger movies since she's part of an ensemble.

Lucy started out well but then was a disaster at the end, Her? she was just a voice.

Lucy made 126 million domestic and 460 worldwide (never saw it personally)

Scar Jo can basically do whatever she wants

The Laughing Man is a pretty fantastic arc, and story that works well with the other things going on in the 1st Gig/season. Though, I find myself a little partial to this sequence from the 2nd Gig.

Talk about returning Section 9 to duty in style.

I can try and give you a general idea.

In the future world where the cyberisation of the human body is a reality and the world is highly interconnected, cyber crime has become a reality that has crossed into the physical realm. Public Security Section 9 and it's members are tasked to investigate and handle (sometimes through direct action or in tandem with other sections) issues of cyber warfare, crime, and terrorism.

No problem. One of the things that happens every now and again is the idea of the individual person being hacked. In the original film, individuals could be "ghost hacked" allowing things from the implementation or manipulation of memories to manipulation of the actual person physically depending on the about the person had been cyberized.

I think a good example would be this clip from the Stand Alone Complex anime series where Batou challenges Motoko to a fight. Though I don't think this technically qualifies as ghost hacking, but rather just manipulation of an individual.

Viruses also have a new and different meaning as well. It's actually pretty interesting when you think of the implications if the brain was actually able to be cyberized.

The firestarter virus would adapt exellenty to the movie. It simultaneously gives the person false memories and takes control over the mechanical part.

There is a lot of potential for them to explore just based on the themes of the franchise. But that's also what I'm most concerned with. The casting and possibly where they decide to make the setting for the film could still work, but the cyber punk aspect of the franchise is pretty integral to most of the stories and definitely to the characters. How adept Kusanagi is at cyber warfare/hacking and manipulation/control is one of the very things that sets her apart and really the only living character in the franchise that was able to match her in skill was The Laughing Man. Actually, IIRC he even out maneuvered her at one point. The Puppet Master and Puppeteer really don't count in my book because, well, they are a product of the system.

Honestly I'll be locked to see this movie if they have Scarlett do this in the preview.
