Which bands came onto the scene and made you say...Oh f***...this is something new and big?

For my generation...I would say GNR Welcome to the Jungle and Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit...neither of which are my favorites, btw.

I'd imagine Elvis and the Beatles have something to say in this regard.

What else? I'm talking about made the hair on the back of your neck stand up kind of stuff.

You know...game changers...

Didn't Buddy Holly pretty much invent the rock power trio? Game starter, not game changer.

This probably doesn't belong in this thread but I've been listening to a lot of Chris Stapleton lately, and as for songs that make the hair stand up on the back of your neck, listen to some of his YouTube videos performing "Sometimes I Cry". It's not country, it's not rock, I don't know what it is, but it's incredible. He's a special, special artist.

For me, personally, in the early 2000s, i was in the post-grunge funk. The biggest rock acts were 3 Doors Down, Staind, and freaking Nickelback. Bleh. Then one night I was flipping channels and happened to check this gem:

I've been a huge White Stripes, and Jack White in general, fan ever since. Dude is a genius.

Funny you mentioned that, I had just been listening to that before I posted. The guy has an insane voice, he can hit those high screaming notes like Chris Cornell but has a deep soul/country voice to go with it. Never heard anything like him.

I run across one every few years.

My current obsession is Richie Kotzen. I'd heard of him since i was a teen reading guitar magazines in the early 90's and just "knew" that he could play guitar. I finally heard him for the first time a couple of years ago and yeah, he's one of the better electric guitarists on the planet.

What melted my brain however was how good the guy can sing. He too can nail Cornel type screams, but has an incredible range far below that. On top of that, the guy just can't really write a bad song. He has so many albums it'll take me forever to work back through them, and he seems to put out a new one every year.

Living Colour. I bought "Vivid" after reading about them in Rolling Stone. I had never heard any of their stuff, and MTV hadn't started playing their videos. When "Cult of Personality" blasted out of the speakers on the drive home, I nearly wrecked.

They got big, but I thought they would stay big for a lot longer.

Pear Jam - Ten. Screw Nirvana, this was the best album to come out of Seattle.

Boyz II Men and Motown Philly

Rage Against the Machine in 1992 was the coolest thing ever for my 7th grade self.

1992 was also the year Snoop Dogg was unleashed on the world.

My redstone moment was 1999 discovering The White Stripes before they were stars.

26 y/o actually but parents were avid music fans so grew up listening to all the late 60's early 70's stuff and discovered a bunch of new music from that time I enjoyed as I got older. I listen to modern stuff too but that time period will always be me favorite. I love guitar driven music.

In my lifetime (born in 84)...(focusing on rock only)

Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, both took alternative rock in new directions

Radiohead, pushed rock to new extremes

Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, White Stripes...revived garage rock and breathed new life into the genre

Kurt Vile, War on Drugs, Mac Demarco...reviving older sounds but in a new way, keeping things going

I just discovered Richie Kotzen with the Winery Dogs a few weeks ago. I agree that this guy is what Chris Cornell would be if he had been made into the perfect musician. His vocals can easily be mistaken for Chris Cornell at his peak, and his guitar chops may not be revolutionary, but they are really, really good. He's not a Game Changer, but he is mind-blowingly under rated.

Another real game changer - Eddie Van Halen. Nobody can deny that.

Boston.

Featuring guitarist/organist/songwriter/producer Tom Scholz, vocalist Brad Delp and a drummer, their debut album (1976) was great, innovative, fresh and ear-catching with spectacular, well-recorded and exquisitely layered guitar/organ sounds, soaring vocals and harmony on great songs like "More Than A Feeling" and "Peace Of Mind." Other exemplary albums followed. Over 25 years later, when I finally saw them live, it took Scholz plus 3 guitarists and a bassist (who all sang), a drummer and the late Delp along with another protege lead singer to recreate their signature sound on stage accurately. I remain very, very impressed.

For me, The Black Crowes debut album "shake your money maker" in '90 was a game changer for me. A breath of fresh air from all the Cherry Pie garbage that had grown really stale. I realize it was largely a throwback to the Stones, but that was a great album and it still holds up today. Can't tell you the last time I even listened to Warrant!
