Seriously...she goes in to turn herself in and he does that to the police station (I realize it was part of one of the trailers).
Can you imagine how defeated you would have to feel to watch him basically take your plan and turn it around on you so thoroughly that all you can do is just walk away.

I thought he actually did a pretty good job of being subtle. Pretty much no one believed he existed except those he'd directly mind controlled. It's not like he brought the Avengers down on him.
