Thinking about watching Strek Trek TNG on Netflix since it's on there now. Worth the watch or does it not stand the test of time? I remember watching bits and pieces as a kid but never a full episode I don't think.

A lot of good episodes, but a lot of really terrible ones. I'd say watch.

You may be able to skip season 1 entirely but I'm far from an expert on the topic. There's some greatness though

This. The good were great. The bad were horrible

I'd say it's definitely a watch. I'm always surprised with how much the show stuck with me considering as a kid I was far from a regular watcher. I've gone back and watched the series a couple times now, and still love it. It's now my regular show for background noise.

Watch.

Be selective in the first season, base your viewings off the descriptions, the link above is a great list of the critical episodes. There aren't many awful episodes after season 1. Always be sure to watch the 2-parters though, many are outright classics.

DS9 is great as a Netflix series too, the large story arcs makes it better on Netflix than it did on TV. There aren't as many great episodes as TNG, but there's a lot less bad episodes and it's the most character driven Star Trek series. Also some of the funniest star trek episodes are DS9(like the great DS9 baseball game).

I liked TNG after season 2. I still think it is worth re-watching select episodes every now and again, but I find myself going back and watching the entire series of DS9. The characters in DS9 I thought were a lot more well rounded and fleshed out. DS9's "In the Pale Moonlight" is possibly my favorite episode from any of the TV series.

Agreed, it got a bad rap because it portrays a darker view of the Star Trek universe, especially the federation. But I thought the story was much more compelling because of the underhanded tactics like the episode you mentioned.

Then again Garak might be my favorite Star Trek character behind Data so I might be biased.

As a side note I also think Bashir is the best doctor in all the series, but I think I'm alone there...

The holo deck episodes used to annoy me to no end. Just w cheap ploy to create anything they wanted to on a space show. And then half the time they would find a way, in the 23rd century, to not be able to turn it off.
But other than that, yes. Make it so.

Season 2 is probably the weakest season. They had to recycle some old stories from the never produced "Star Trek: Phase II" and ended it with a clip show due to the WGA being jerks and going on strike.

Like all shows, it has great episodes, good episodes, so-so episodes, and some real stinkers.

It's worth watching and gets better after Season 2, and especially after Wesley leaves.

DS9 gave us some pretty great morally grey characters in Garak and Luther Sloan (for the few times he was in episodes). It also gave us Michael Eddington, and was a prelude to the lengths that Sisko would go later in the series. It also showed us some of the lowest points that the Federation had thanks to The Dominion War with the crushing defeat at the Second Battle of Chin'toka and the darkest side of the war perhaps with the episode of The Siege of AR-588. Quark really shined in the later half of the series IMO, even though he was always great. He had some major character development.

Bashir was better a much better doctor than Crusher, and I kind of thought that Phlox and he were on the same level. I'm not quite sure where The Doctor from Voyager comes in, because while he was interesting he took a long time to grow on me. That wasn't the case with Phlox or Bashir. I liked Phlox off the bat because he was kind of off the wall. ("Optimism Captain! Optimism!" and his huge smile.)

Normally it is a little more subtle like

"I can't promise a 5th light when we're done, but I will get on it"

Good article. The episodes are stand-alone for the most part, so you won't miss too much by skipping the bad ones.

Any kind of themed episode pissed me off. I watch a space show for space s***.

The first two seasons had some growing pains but then it really hit it's stride.

Inner light is probably one of the best Trek episodes ever. Lot of other great ones like the Wounded and Yesterday's Enterprise.

That said, I love DS9 for the characters it brought, especially Garak and Dukat.

There was a a LOT of writer turn over in the first two seasons IIRC, and i also think I remember reading that Roddenberry was heavily involved in either rewriting scripts until his health started to decline.

This.

The series is good, worth the watch.

DS9 catches flak because it's not how Roddenberry would have done it. Iirc he was against war in his future.

That said, the war episodes of DS9 are the best 2 seasons of Star Trek.

Roddenberry was too much of a idealist to realize that no matter how much he wanted it to be, nothing is perfect. The Federation might be a nice place (mostly) but there are always bad guys out there.

His entire "money doesn't exist" had to be ditched because the writers on DS9 ran into too many issues without it.

He would have flipped his lid over "In The Pale Moonlight" which IMO is one of the best DS9 episodes.

We not only had The Dominion War in DS9, but also a renewal of conflict between the Klingon Empire and the Federation as part of the cold war the Dominion was doing to destabilize the Alpha quadrant for a time.

If you watched TNG at the time, you can handle a full re-watch, understanding that some episodes will be groaners. My wife and I watched the entire series over several years, finishing last year.

We're taking a break from Trek right now. We just watched all of Fringe (highly recommended). I'd like to watch DS9 sometime soon. I only ever watched half the first season, but I hear (and read, above) that it gets way better.

The thing is Roddenberry was basically a socialist.

It was the networks that really pushed the Original series in the direction it went.

Later, Roddenberry was essentially given free reign with TNG and the first two season showed that. The most telling was the one where the Enterprise found the ship with some cryo-frozen 20th century people on it. One was a banker and Picard basically dressed the guy down for being driven by money. With essentially unlimited energy and replicators, people didn't have to work.

You can tell they really toned down a lot of that after season 3.

I always recommend starting with the movies Generations and First Contact. Then powering through all of TNG and pick up the last two moves at the end. Suffering through the early episodes makes the later ones that much better. Then watch DS9. After DS9 watch TOS movies and decide if you want to watch TOS. Finally watch ENT and VOY which were overall good but not great. If you have made it that far you are just hungry for more trek.

If you are a real trooper watch ENT-VOY straight through in chronological order.

Why would you bookend TNG the series with the four movies? That seems random.

Not only that, but Generations has the Enterprise D, while First Contact has the Enterprise E and will spoil some major plot points for people who hadn't seen TNG to begin with. Not that it is required to see the episodes, but still.
