I've recently discovered the world of podcasts, and I'm addicted. I listen to them while I mow the yard, drive, etc... and I have a long family trip coming up, so I was looking for some recommendations.

Here Is what I have liked so far for anyone else interested:

Dan Carlin's Wrath of the Khans series. Those Mongols were some bad mamby jambies
http://www.dancarlin.com/hardcore-history-series/

Serial - Lots of people listened to this already, but if you haven't, it's ridiculously addictive
http://serialpodcast.org/

Radiolab - Mostly science based, but there are some good ones in there
http://www.radiolab.org/series/podcasts/

99% Invisible - Again, hit or miss, but I really like some of them.

I enjoy Sword and Scale, as well as Intelligence Squared debates.

However, I just recently got into How Did This Get Made? (I know I know, late to the party). I'm in love

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is amazing. He just finished his 6 part series on WWI a few months ago.

Also check out Still Untitled: the Adam Savage Project, especially if you're into movies, special effects, and maker stuff. The movie Spoilercast episodes are great fun.

Freakonomics is still one of the best podcasts out there.

Monstercat if you like EDM.

You might be a little old, as you say you have a family and all, but I have been listening to the Total Frat Move podcasts and they are hilarious. The guy they have on there is a stand-up comic that Was in a fraternity from Penn state, and all he does is answer emails mostly about relationships that 18-26 year olds have, along with a bunch of local stand-up comedians from the New York area. He also talks about old college stories, and I love to hear about how other people's experiences in college were. Make sure you have headphones if you are listening at work though.

You must remember this: Great production about stories of old Hollywood. I just finished a great episode on Marlon Brando. Plus they have a 10 part series (only released 6 so far) on Charles Manson.

I'm going to try a couple of the podcasts listed in this thread, but I seriously doubt any of them will give me as much enjoyment as this one statement did.

I listened to the first part of the Wrath of the Khans on Hardcore History today and I'm hooked! I'm disappointed that older episodes have to be paid for, but I'll live.

HDTGM is hysterical. If you're new to it, I recommend getting Sleepaway Camp, Battlefield Earth and staying alive. They also have great episodes on con air and the fast and furious movies where Jason basically loses his mind with enthusiasm.

Judge John Hodgman is fantastic, and probably ok to listen to with your family.

Josh Wolf and Sarah Colonna have Off the Rails which is hilarious and rambling - they're on hiatus right now though.

All five of Wrath of the Khans are free here:

It's an amazing series. When he said that Ghengis Khan was born clutching a blood clot the size of a knuckle in his fist, I was hooked.

I ponied up and bought all the previous Hardcore History episodes and I'm pretty glad I did. It's close to 40 hours of podcast and great if you have to spend a lot of time behind the wheel.

Great stuff all around.

I'd throw in Demolition Man as one of their great episodes as well. Hilarious.

I second the Moth, anything from How Stuff Works (Stuff you should know, stuff they don't want you to know, stuff you missed in history class, etc), Radiolab, This American Life, Hard Core History

I would add to the list:

Star Talk Radio - hosted by Neil Degrasse Tyson
Criminal - kind of hit or miss but when it hits it's really solid.
The Nerdist

And a plug for a friend of mine who is an aspiring comedian - The Mundane Festival

To add one more, listened to Radiolab's Words episode and I was blown away. Extremely thought provoking and made me think of the world in a very different way. Haven't listened to any of their other episodes but I will after this great introduction.

I've started listening to podcasts on road trips and it's made my trips seem too short. Which is great.

The other podcast I think everyone should try out is This American Life. My favorite episode is Dr. Gilmer and Mr. Hyde.

I need to try the others listed in this thread as well.
