Saw them at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion earlier this evening. WHAT A SHOW, plus JEFF BECK played with them also.

Really? Over Buddy Holly, Janis Joplin, Roy Orbison, or Pantera? And since ZZ Top is technically Texas Blues, not Rock and Roll, that means you put them over T-Bone Walker, Edgar Winter, or Stevie Ray Vaughan?

If you really want to get that technical about it, Buddy Holly is more rockabilly than rock and roll. And yes, ZZ Top is better than Pantera. But again, different styles. And I'd put ZZ Top over those blues artists as well, except SRV.

One of the best concerts I've seen was the Rebel Yell tour - ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I'm not sure I'd call ZZ Top blues. They have some blues songs but a blues band they are not.

I love technical R&R discussions. Taste is certainly objective, but in no way is ZZ Top better than SRV.

SRV! ZZ Top went off the rails in the 80's.

I like ZZ Top more than SRV.

i wouldn't call Blue October the greatest, but I do like them.

Although I don't agree with you on ZZtop being the best R&R Texas Band, they do put on quite a show at the Cynthia Woods Pavilion. It's like a homecoming to them. I got to see them and Tom Petty a few years back at that venue and they blew Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers away.

My votes would be:

SRV - Blues/Rock
Holly or Orbison - Classic
Butthole Surfers or Pantera - Metal
Toadies - Alt Rock

There are too many rock genres out there. Top of the above list for me would be SRV. Probably because I prefer blues/rock over the other genres.

I feel if they would have stayed true to their roots I would have put them ever so slightly ahead of SRV.

The Tejas album alone puts them ahead without even any hits. Comparable to Exile if you're a real Texan.

SRV vs. ZZ Top is an interesting debate. I would argue SRV was a better artist. But I really like more ZZ Top songs. I realize this is a paradox.
