Punk and rock and roll aren't mutually exclusive and my point is that all four of those bands I mentioned are generally from different eras and sound different but are still all considered punk. The misfits are my favorite punk band fwiw.

I like some good hardcore, but I haven't stepped out and found anything new in a long time. I've gotten old.

I just don't understand these 2 types of people:

A. Green Day is not a punk band.
- Are the Ramones punk? What makes the Ramones different from Green Day? They both wrote love songs about girls and were melodic.

B. Green Day used to be punk with 1039/smooth, Kerplunk!, and Dookie.
- Really? The only thing that has changed since then is the label (except for Dookie) and the quality of the recording. They sang about the same thing back then and even were considered "poppy" in their underground scene. This is a stupid comment; hell, their most aggressive album was actually Insomniac.

The fact is Green Day is a ROCK N ROLL BAND from a punk background. They grew up around the punk scene (living as a gutter punks in abandoned warehouses) and lived in it more than most of the people probably *****ing about them not being punk. Their particular style of music is more along the lines of the Ramones and Cheap Trick.

It's almost like an Aggie fan who never went to A&M telling an Aggie grad, who doesn't really watch much football because he prefers soccer, that he isn't a real Aggie.

PS: American Idiot is a phenomenal album and does storytelling better than any other rock opera I know and is comparable to Tommy on that front.

So this jlb guy.. Is he still a teenager?

I never knew green day had hardcore fans that were like, grown up.

I mean, I was the old guy at their concert when I saw them, and I was 22.

Oh the irony of a grown man attempting to disparage a fellow Aggie on an internet forum and calling HIM immature...

Hey don't bring HIM into this conversation. They are the best post-grunge goth-punkpop band there is, scandanavian or otherwise. They'll get their nod when their 25 years are up.

This.

I'm not a big Green Day fan, really haven't liked any of their stuff since Dookie and whatever song that was from the Angus soundtrack.

But American Idiot was a brilliant album.

I'm 49 and a big Green Day fan. And Green Day doesn't hate America anymore than Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson did. I like their music.

I never liked Green Day much, and I despised them for their ignorant political views but, just like Nirvana, which I was never a fan of, I appreciate their talent and contribution to rock, which was massive.

I was all rap in the 90s. But I'm not gonna hate on a band that had tons of wanna be bands come after and that helped shaped the way Rock is today. I'm not saying they were as influential and important as Nirvana, but they are pretty damn close and have put out way more material that is just as successful.

It was an album that inspired millions of people to pick up a guitar, go into their garage, and start bands.

Nobody bought an instrument, grabbed their buddies, and went to a garage to churn out terrible flavor of the day cap before Green Day.

I wouldn't even put it top 10 as far as concept albums go. Maybe top 5 of we only consider commercial success.

Best concept albums

Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) - The Kinks
The Wall - Pink Floyd
Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust And the Spiders from Mars - David Bowie
Mignonette - The Avett Brothers
Set Sail The Prairie - Kaddisfly
The Alchemy Index - Thrice
Southern Rock Opera - Drive By Truckers
Michigan - Sufjan Stephens
Illinois - Sufjan Stephens
Self titled - 30 Seconds to Mars
The Unforgiving - Within Temptation
Tommy - The Who
Songs for the deaf - QOTSA
Acts 1,2,3 - The Dear Hunter
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory - Dream Theater
Levithian - Mastodon
Mylo Xyloto - Coldplay
Kezia - Protest The Hero

There's EP series that I'm not counting by Future of Forestry, Barcelona, Mae, and some others.

And I'm sure I've left off some. ConcePt albums are great, but Green Day makes a political album to show off their childish angst and calls it a concept.

Is this the thread where we talk about punk music?

So a couple of things come to mind reading this:
quote:
Not even the best 90's punk band.

The Offspring > Green Day

No. The best 90s punk bands were NOFX and Rancid. Then Bad Religion and Pennywise.

;-)

Offspring are very good. Green Day was better. I wouldn't say they were or are a better punk band than NOFX Rancid Bad Religion or Pennywise. But they were more commercially successful than all those combined. Someone put it best earlier when they said Green Day is the most famous and successful punk band of all time. They are the Michael Jackson/Beatles/Elvis of punk.

quote:
And lol at Green Day being "punk".

This has been covered but I will re-state. Green Day is punk and has respect from real punk rockers, not fan boys. They are different sounding but they came up in the scene. It is interesting reading people's responses because you get a flavor for what "kind" of punk music they are into.
